the computer

Although the computer has nearly infinity potential, the telephone's small purpose to connect two people has done a greater thing: connect the world.

When the telephone was put into use, the world's progress sped up rapidly. It was something new to have an American businessman bargain in real time with Chinese manufacturers more or less a world away. The telephone destroyed the atmosphere of isolation. Most people had felt that places out of a weeks' distance are places that don't concern them. It was a contributing factor to the nation-states that the American colonies assumed, rather than all the states as a whole country. The telephone gave people a sense that the world does affect them, and that they are in a diverse planet with many cultures and many opportunities that should be explored.

The computer is noteworthy. However, it was mainly a computational device when it was first used. Therefore, its impact was not magnificient as one could imagine. When the computer was introduced, it was largely for governments, and its computation abilities were limited to a simple modern hand-held calculator. Its limited capabilities restricted it from changing the world all at once like the telephone did. Now, the computer serves as a median to transport information. However, information was already readily available at universities, and telephones already provided instant communications. The computers feat was simply to put all the previous accomplishments into one, not anything new. Its introduction was too late to cause dramatic changes in culture.

The car sounds like a serious candidate, but it didn't do anything new either. Cars, when first introduced did not travel very fast. Infact, horse-drawn chariots were sometimes faster, more reliable, and more terran-worthy. The impact of the car came too slowly, overshadowed by more notable feats such as the airplane. The airplane's development, however, was decades too slow to beat the telephone to connecting the world.

When the telephone was unveiled, the world began to understand their place on a larger scale. No longer was life influenced by the local banker or the town's sheriff, but life was expanded beyond the horizons of Earth. World politics, world economics, and world wars resulted from the telephone. The introduction of the telephone has brought the greatest impact to mankind.

Well.... if I absolutely have to choose my answer out of the given choices you provided, of course it is the computer.
If the computer wasn't ever invented, you wouldn't have been able to ask this question.
People all over the world are using their computer right this second! It's THE best tool for anyone - students mainly refer to the internet for research on a report rather then an encyclopedia nowadays; other than cell phones, people mainly communicate by instant-messeging, or emailing.
Also, if you missed the radio or television news, you can always look at what's happening to this world just by a click of your mouse -when YOU want to. Places like Myspace, Youtube or Quizilla let you explore your imagination and creativity, and let you share that with everyone else -even people you don't know!

Even though that somethings have made people think bad about computers(porn, internet predators), they provide more good and useful things to us than we think about-since they're becoming more and more of everyday life. We may take them for granted, but when you really think about it, it has helped hundreds of millions of people!

This is really a tough one. During the Industrial revolution, I would have to say the locomotive (train), since they basically connected the (our)world's resources together and provided a method of bringing products to market.

Another very big one would be the sewing machine. Think how important that one is every time you walk into your closet.

The biggest innovation in our lifetime (or slightly before) would have to be Ben Franklin and Thomas A. Edison contributions involving electricity. So, I'd have to mention the machines (various types of generators - wind, steam turbine, etc., etc.) that enable us to experience light, heating, Air Conditioning, computers, television, radio and the list goes on forever.

Then there's the machines of war. Even though we may not like these machines as much as something like the modern dishwasher, we still have them for creating / maintaining so many of our freedoms.

I don't believe I can give you just one answer to this, at first, seemingly simple question.

One thing I can state for sure is, this question definitely inspires pondering at so many levels. Makes one realize how lucky we really are with all of man's innovations and discovery's throughout our short history and the positive impact they've had on all of our lives.

So, back to your original question. Since, I'm hungry at the moment and I happen to know that momma's got cold pizza in the fridge. I would have to say the microwave oven is the greatest machine of all time . . . . .yes, the microwave oven . . . . .that would have to be it!

. . . . .at least until my tummie's full again.

Most important in life would probably be either the telephone or car.

Most significant would probably be computer (because of the internet) and television. Television has brought us a really fast means of communication and media. Accessable to almost anybody.

But the all depend on eachother.

And if you ment which one has had the most significant change on history or whatever... its probably electricity.

None of the above. The electrical generator has probably changed mankind more than any other invention. What do you have that works without electricity? None of the above.

Imagine a world without electricity.
