Female dogs are only able to mate while “in season”, also called “in heat”. Male dogs can be sexually active all year long.

A female dog - also called “*****” will come in heat about every six months. The heat lasts for up to three weeks and the ***** will experience her first heat cycle at around 6 - 7 months. Some larger dog breeds at 8 - 9 months.

A female dog does not show significant behavior changes during heat (contrary to cats). Signs of a female in heat are:

Swelling of the vulval area
Vaginal discharge and dripping of blood
During the middle of the heat females will allow a male to mate and are more reluctant at the beginning and towards the end.
Females in heat will attract males for the whole period of her cycle. The scent of her urine and the vaginal discharge is a strong, irresistible signal for male dogs. If you have male dogs in your neighborhood it is better to drive your animal to remote areas for her daily walk. Otherwise your house and surroundings will be of great attraction for every male! If your dog is normally kept in a fenced yard do not leave her outside unattended during this time. Even if you think that the dog can’t escape, males smelling a ***** in heat are quite inventive and go to extraordinary lengths! Don’t let her off leash, consider that the ***** will succumb to hormones, even the best trained one. The most loving and obedient female can turn into an uncontrollable bundle of hormones during her heat cycle.

Dogs do not experience “menopause”, meaning that if you don’t spay your animal it will be in heat twice a year for as long as the animals lives.

If you know that you will never breed, think about spaying your dog. A good time for spaying is at an age of about 6 - 7 months. Some veterinarians recommend to let the animal go through the first heat cycle, some spay as early as 2 - 3 months. Opinions vary. Most vets though prefer not to spay during a heat cycle due to an increased risk of hemorrhage. In case an “accident” happened and the female is in the early stage of pregnancy, she can be spayed one week after the ending of the heat cycle.

Dog in Heat: The first heat is manifested between the first 7 or 8 months, according to the size of the adult (the smaller breeds start earlier). We can observe the vulva gets swollen and leaves traces of blood. The female dog attracts the males. This lasts about 5 to 15 days, and is shown by the posture and acceptance of the male. The female is in heat 2 times a year. It is important for the owner to keep control of the dates in their health book. The owner's control of the female dog's heat and reproduction is essential of the dog's hygiene. Different products exist as pills that have a hormone for the prevention of this stage, as well as for the males that experiment excessive sexual excitation.

The Prevention of Heat: In order to prevent this, we must start this treatment, 7 to 15 days before the stage begins. Therefore, we must not intervene during the first heat. Most of the heat inhibitors contain megesterol acetate. If administered daily during 32 days we can have four to six months of tranquility. This hormone has very few secondary effects if they are respected according to the instructions. The presentation usually comes in the form of sugar and has a great advantage since the female dog likes it a lot.

I've had two male dogs and they were always in the mood to play or all over you giving you kisses. I also have 2 females they pretty much only want to be bothered when they want to be. Not that they are less loyal they just like to be left alone often. (Not saying this is so for all dogs, but mine are like this)

I have two bitches on the side yard. I don't know how often they are in heat, but sometimes when I go outside those bitches are horny as hell or something because they want to play catch at 2:00Am and I'm not even in the mood when I am slumped over the trash can trying to throw out the bottles of booz from the party the night before, or maybe it was the same night. But I digress, bitches are just dogs, and we shall love em'!

A Female dog is in heat once a year for about two weeks. I think, or is it every six months for two weeks?

They have a season every 6 - 8 months although each dog has their own cycle. They will bleed for 2 weeks. After this they are still in season for another week without any bleeding. This is the ideal time to mate them.

They usually go into heat every 6 months but it is possible that they do more than that. Her attitude may change, she may have a "period" and she may bark alot to go outside.
