The vet will take a little scraping to determine if it is mites, then give the appropriate medicine if he does. It's not from diet. Give him a treat cup with a good parakeet pellet, like Zupreem, along with a dish of high quality seed. Nutriberries are very good, too. Bake "birdie bread". Simply take a Jiffy corn muffin mix and add crushed pellets, fruit or vegie baby food, whole eggs with shell finely ground, frozen vegies, etc. You may have to add a little extra water for moisture. Bake into mini muffins or cut into small squares and freeze. Microwave one every couple of days, and crumble it into a treat dish. Most birds love this and it's a good way to sneak other nutrition into them! Also, many budgies will nibble on fresh greens like parsley or kale. Try to clip a little bunch to the side of his cage by his favorite perch.

To treat Scaley Face is very simple. There are many methods on the market. The simplest is to rub Vaseline onto the cere and legs of the budgerigar. This suffocates the mite and most of the problem is solved. The treatment should be kept up for a full week as the mite lays eggs and they will be hatching all of the time.If your bird has a real bad case of Scaley face,it may be worth seeing a vet.
Now that the cure has been applied to your bird a thorough clean of your cage is necessary. All wood should be thoroughly cleaned with an appropriate disinfectant.

Mite and lice spray will not do any good as the scaley face mite is not effected by the spray. This is a horrible desease and can kill. Get a little bottle of scaley face oil to put onto the bird to smother the mites. If you cant get that, use parafin oil. Use a cotton ear bud to smother the effected areas. Do this for a couple of days, then, stop for a couple of days and then repeat. Its hard to permanently get rid of this so keep trying. It usualy effects week or inbred birds aswel. Good luck, hope I have helped, Jane.

Nothing to do with nutrition it's a mite that can be got rid of by medication Ivomec is a cure or a petrolum jelly cream.

do not spend money on vet bills this caused by a mite burrowing into the cere and sometimes the legs.your bird came from a infected source or you have purchased another bird that was infected with scaly face.
the treatment is vaseline applied on the affected areas this seals the holes the mites have burrowed they cannot breath and very shortly the die and the affected area clears up.
the old methods are the best.

THE EASIEST AND MOST COST EFFECTIVE WAY IS TO USE PAW PAW OINMENT 3 X'S A DAY AND SEPERATE THE BIRD FOR OTHERS AS THIS IS CONTAGIOUS. YOU NEED TO DISINFECT THE CAGE AND LEAVE IT OUT IN THE SUN. THE BEST DISINFECTANT THAT I HAVE FOUND EFFFECTIVE IS DETOL. ANY BRANCHES IN THE CAGE NEED TO BE THROWN OUT. ALWAYS PLACE NEWPAPER ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CAGE AND HAVE A THICK LAYER OF SEED ON IT TO. THEN CHANGE THE NEWSPAPER DAILY
