Get him neutered at the first possibliity. I have had shih tzus my whole life, and I am also a groomer. I have a client right now who is like this. He is getting better, but you just have to reinforce"NO!" to him and maybe squirt him with a water bottle when he does this. You might want to consult a trainer. Believe me, you are in for some serious trouble if you don't get this taken care of. Shih Tzus need to be groomed quite often and if he bites no one is going to want him as a client, and you will end up with one scraggly looking dog in the long run. Not to mention the legal risks involved if he bites someone and causes harm. Puppies should generally be playful and carefree. Do something now! :-)

Breed Guide provided by: American Kennel Club

Toy Group

Shih Tzu

Characteristics
The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, alert toy dog with long flowing double coat. Befitting his noble Chinese ancestry as a highly valued, prized companion and palace pet, the Shih Tzu is proud of bearing and has a distinctively arrogant carriage with head well up and tail curved over the back. Although there has always been considerable size variation, the Shih Tzu must be compact and solid, carrying good weight and substance.

Owning
Families with small children should always supervise the children when they play with the dog; the Shih Tzu is a sturdy dog but his size puts him at a disadvantage. The coat requires at least a half an hour grooming per day, which should be a consideration before bringing a Shih Tzu into your home. The Shih Tzu is a true companion. His happy, outgoing, and affectionate temperament coupled with his friendly and trusting nature make him a great house pet.

Did You Know?
The Shih Tzu was admitted to registration in the American Kennel Club Stud Book in March 1969. The Shih Tzu is sometimes called the "chrysanthemum-faced dog" because the hair grows about the face in all directions.

got this info from the first site listed the other will be of some help as well

I found the following information online:
The Shih-Tzu is a happy dog with lots of character. They are a friendly dog that makes friends easily with everyone. They are a very alert dog that will let you know when someone is at your home. Once that person comes inside they will be friendly to them. They can sometimes be stubborn, but can be trained with patience. Overall, they are very playful and affectionate breed that need to be with people to be happy.
I don't know what's wrong with your dog but all the shih tzus I've seen, were very calm, gentle and amiable. You need to get training for his aggressive nature and the sooner, the better.

I have a shih tzu also. He doesn't get along with children because they don't know how to pet him softly, and they always come at him from behind, and that scares him.

Just be patient with your dog. Treat him like a child, reward him when he does good, and punish when he does wrong. But no spanking and time outs, cause then he'll just look at you like your crazy and he'll be kinda afraid of you. Just a firm "no" should suffice.

Hope that helps.

A lot of times dogs react this way out of fear rather than aggression. He may be picking up on your fear (of him biting) and reacting this way. Have a friend who knows the situation work with you. Hold the dog and have the other person approach making eye contact and conversation with just you. If the dog acts up, have the person walk away for a few minutes then approach you again. If the dog accepts the person, praise him. Do not allow just anyone to hold him or touch him just because he's cute. (I would get rather snappish myself if that were to happen to me.) The earlier you start socializing the pup the better chance you have of molding his behavior. Good luck.

Introduce him to as many people as possible while he still has his puppy teeth! Be very firm when he bites and tell him no and tap him on the nose.

sometimes purebred dogs are mean and inbred by people who don't know what they're doing. Take him to puppy training at a local trainer (not petsmart) they are bad at petsmart and dont know how to train go somewhere respectable.

just take the dog around more people as often as you can or have people come over more often and have them play it and if bites be firm with it and say no.
