Replace it with another, more constructive behavior. Also, remain aware throughout the day and try to be conscious of the fact that you're doing. It's probably largely unconscious and you probably only notice after you start doing. What I'm saying is, try to become aware of when it begins, what precipitates it. It may be caused by anxiety. The anxiety may be caused by repressed feelings. Whenever you repress or deny a feeling instead of expressing it, it does not go away. It may go out of consciousness, but it gets trapped in the body in the form of tension, nervous ticks, and other habits, such as yours. Focusing your attention on the area where the tension is taking place or massaging the area tends to release the tension, provided you are willing to let sometimes unpleasant repressed thoughts come into consciousness. The thoughts may be repressed anger at somone or something, sexual thoughts, murderous thoughts, or any thought that you found too unacceptable to hold in your conscious mind. That's why it got repressed in the first place. The only way to release the thought or feeling is to be aware of it and accept it for what it is, objectively. This does not mean you have to act on the thought. I am not suggesting you murder people or have sex with anyone, just don't repress thoughts or these same feelings will get stronger and stronger until they can't be contained. Allowing the thought to exist without denying its existence is the only way to free yourself from the thought, and thus the tension.

Just a thought, but try getting a mouthpiece like football players of boxers wear, and keep it in when you are at home, or sleeping. It will prevent chewing, and also make you aware of when you are trying to, so that maybe when you are out and about, that awareness of what you are doing will carry over so you can conciously catch yourself.

One way to stop chewing on the inside of your mouth is to be aware that doing this (if you are doing it consciously) can lead to oral cancer.

Talk to your dentist if this condition persists - she may have some answers for you as well.

I have the same problem. Sometimes I just keep it on my mind that I won't do it anymore and it works. Sometimes I just don't care.
