Not physically but emotionally. My dog laid in bed with me forever when I went through a bad breakup. If he hadn't been here for me to hug on, I woud have gone crazy.

There is no doubt in my mind that my rottweiler saved my life more than once - just by being there.
There was a time I was traveling from Florida to Maine. I dislike roadside motels so I stop at rest areas, recline the seat and will take several catnaps along the way. My dog always went with me, sitting in the front passenger seat. At night, I try to find a well-lit shopping center right off the highway. But one time, I couldn't find a shopping center, so I pulled into a small rest stop. I had the passenger window down so my dog could get the wind in her face - her favorite part of traveling. She never stuck her head out, she just liked the wind coming in the window.
I pulled into the stop and found a place to park away from the activity of the restrooms and put the car in park. A man came out of nowhere, put his hands on the passenger door and stuck his face inside my car. What he couldn't see in the dark was was my mostly-black BIG dog sitting next to that open window. He had just stuck his face a few inches away from a rottweiler's nose. And my dog gave him her best poker face while emitting her barely audible but very convincing guttoral growl - through her trademark closed lips. The man backed out of the window, removed his hands from my car and said, "Oh, sorry, thought you were someone else."
Yeah, right - like a woman alone...
I was suddenly wide awake! It's amazing how that works. I didn't see where he appeared from nor did I see where he went. I left the rest stop and continued on my way. But there is no doubt in my mind that if I had been alone, I would have been dead - had it not been for my dog.

I know my dog would - he thinks he saved my life once. I was home with my daughter and 2 other young girls (sisters) after school one day. Their father was going to pick them up after work. I'm not sure why, but he thought it would be ok to walk into my home without ringing the bell or knocking. I never saw my dog react so quickly. He flew to the door barking and growling and grabbed the man's arm in his jaw. He didn't bite down - no marks were left, but he didn't let that man beyond the door. My dog knew this person too. He let the man go when I gave the command and said Hello. (also berrated the fool for walking into my home uninvited)
I have no doubt that my dog would save me. I can just imagine his reaction if he didn't someone and they tried to get into my home or take my children or myself.

No.But my 105# german shepherd has come and stopped in front of me on the trails at the 1100 acre park we go to daily to keep me from going ahead while acting nervous. When I walk around him he'll get in front again and sit on my feet so I can't go further.
This happening I realize that there's no noise. No birds chirping,no bugs buzzing and nothings stirring in the brush.I can't see birds flying overhead either.Usually all good signs that danger is near and I should not have been daydreaming.
I forget sometimes on my daily deer hunt that there are wolves and coyote in the park and a cougar was spotted a year ago altho I've not seen any sign of it.
I trust my dogs judgement. If he's uncomfortable we go the other way.

My first German shepherd definitely kept our house from being robbed and may have saved our lives in the process. We had the old-fashioned nine-pane glass windows, and one night, someone very quietly broke a pane out, reached through, and unlocked the back door.
We didn't even hear him, but Cody did. He broke out of his kennel (bent the Pet-Porter door off its hinges, in fact) and met the guy at the back door. Cody was a search dog and was trained to work in complete silence. . .so the first thing that the burglar saw was this great big grey dog waiting for him and not making a sound.
Needless to say, the would-be burglar hit the road, and Cody got the hero treatment that he deserved. And the interesting part was that he was only six months old at the time!
The police pointed out something later that I thought was pretty funny. It had rained earlier, and the guy's footprints on the way to the house were closely spaced together, like he was tiptoeing.
But on the way out, the footprints were as far apart as they could be. . .he was running as fast as he could to get away. Cody obviously made a believer out of him!

Yep.
Well....okay....not *exactly*....but this is what happened:
It was around 1am, and I had just gotten home from the library (studying with friends for finals.) I let my dog out to potty, and she made a beeline toward the back of the yard barking, with her hair standing straight up. She didn't even stop to pee, which she always did within 30 seconds of going out. It was not her "I see another animal in the woods I want to chase and play with" bark....there was a definite "there's a person back here" twang to that bark. (I'm sure anyone with a dog knows what I mean.)
I suddenly saw a flashlight turn on back there. (Believe me, at this point I just about you-know-what my pants!!!!) He was a scuzzy-looking guy in a torn flannel shirt with a dirty face and his gun drawn, peeking out from behind the corner of the storage shed in my unfenced backyard (that backed up to a wooded area) where I lived in college. Turns out he was an undercover police officer on a stakeout, since they believed thieves who were breaking into cars in the neighborhood to steal audio equipment, etc. were entering and slipping back out through a path near there.
But SHE didn't know that, LOL. Nor did I....and I never would have had a clue anyone was back there had it not been for her. If he hadn't been a police officer, I could have been dead meat if I were alone. But she held him on guard and did not let him move an INCH. She was fearless. He looked like he was going to you-know-what in his pants, too. When I went in and called the police dept. to verify his identity when he yelled out to me who he was, they....ahem....'politely'(?) asked me to call my dog off of their officer....LOL.
I hadn't done her gun training yet at that point...so honestly, she could have been dead meat, too, since he was holding a loaded gun....but STILL!!! I was quite impressed with her that the long hours we'd spent on guard dog training with each other seemed to pay off. That was shen she was only a year old. One of my window locks was broken (we were all poor in vet school, lol) and could easily be opened from the outside, and the front door didn't always lock securely either....but I never felt unsafe as long as she was there. :-)
Best Doberman Pinscher in the world. She went all the way through veterinary college with me....and is waiting at the Rainbow Bridge. *sniffle*
EDIT: Great question! I'm LOVING the stories. Hope more get posted. North, you had me cracking up the way you described that barely audible guttural growl through closed lips!!! I know just what you mean, and could picture it exactly. It's priceless, isn't it? And I'm LMAO @ the wide footprints Cody caused vs. the tiptoeing in. :D

Not yet. She probably would though. Whenever people grab me playfully she growls and grabs their arm with her mouth and pulls them away. =D All I have to do is say 'Sequoia help" and she turns into Rescue Dog!
