1) Get a replacement from the vet.

2) If you don't know the vet that gave it to him, (ex: got the dog at a shelter) and you have already registered it with the county, then you can get a copy through them.

3) Get another shot. Then you have papers again.

It won't hurt for her to have another one, even if it was the 3-year one. That same exact vaccination used to be given every year before it got clearance for the 3 year label.

Before any know-it-all's mouth off about that, I suggest you read the Compendium for Rabies Immunization in Animals. It's updated and included with the appendices in Kirk and Bonagura's Current Veterinary Therapy textbook, which comes out every two years.

Unless you have an advanced degree in veterinary immunology, your opinion does not trump theirs.

The idea in the post by Bladedogs about having a blood titer done would work, too....but it's expensive. I've done it when clients have requested it.

(Sorry, but the law says it's up to you to keep up with that piece of paper and be able to produce it on demand. If it had been done in a veterinarian's office, they could indeed give you a duplicate in the event you lost it...and yes, a small paperwork fee usually applies. The tag alone does not constitute legal 'proof' since it doesn't contain a description of the animal, vaccine serial # and lot #, etc. I also tend to agree that this dog was probably not vaccinated for rabies. Some shelters employ veterinarians for that purpose, but most don't. It was probably just dist/parvo.)

Gee great. The only thing I can think of that hasn't already been suggested would be to have a vet perform a blood titter so they can give verification of immunity.
I don't know if you have legal option against the vet because they failed to keep a copy of the paper. You do not want to give another shot as that will damage your dogs immune system.

You will have to go to where the vaccine was given to get a replacement. Usually if the shot was given at the vet, they will charge you a small fee for a copy. If the place you got the vaccine at cannot give you a copy, your dog will have to be re-vaccinated. It will not hurt him to get the shot again.

Depending on where you live they have a department kind of the the board of health where all animal records are supposed to be sent if you call your vet they can give you the info and you contact them and get another copy but it is kind of wried that the vet can not print off another copy for you.

Ask your vet why you cannot have another copy. They should be able to print a duplicate copy and stamp DUPLICATE on it

They may be thinking you are trying to use it for a second dog.
