McAfee has an undelte program at their web site that you can download that address this issue you are having. Their instructions are very clear on what you do after you download it and from what I understand does the job quite well. Good Luck.

click start, run, type in regedit, highlight my computer, click edit then find. type in mcafee. when something comes up you are sure has to do with it simple delete it..continue with the find until it tells you it has finished...........PS be careful this is the computer registry delete the wrong thing and its good bye to your computer. format and rebuild time.

You can go to properties & they give you a menu of all your files & programs. you can delete all programs that have McAfee on them

On their website is a cleanup program.
Norton is as bad or worse.
I don't know what you're using now, but I like AVG from http://free.grisoft.com
