Why are you asking this question? Is it because you see the subject matter of David"s art as suggesting a preoccupation with semi-naked forms? You will need to read a little about the socio-political climate in which David painted. His work is allegorical, there is an attempt by the artist to relate the republican struggle of the French people to the great classical traditions of the Greco/Roman era, hence the semi-nude figures. Do not equate the images in David's work with publicity shots of gay bars! France was on the eve of a revolution and these paintings celebrated the moral vigour of republican Rome as a metaphor for the aspirations of the French people.
