Why would you want to prevent your children from reading? Reading is one of the best things that you can let your children do. If you make your children stop reading, they will be at risk for illiteracy later in life. It is hard for a lot of parents to get their children to read. You should be overjoyed that your children want to. Would you rather they played violent video games or sat in front of the TV all day? You need to make reading a time that you can share with your kids. Become a part of their favorite past-time. Don't banish it!! You will be hurting your children more than you can possibly know by telling them that they can't read when they want to. You are essentially telling them that they cannot learn or better themselves. Is that really what you want for your children?

The only problem I can forsee with this is that.....
1. it's good for them to get some exercise
and
2. if your child is like my oldest, you may have to take a crowbar to get the book out of his hands when he is supposed to go to sleep.....and then we have to take the clip-on light and his glasses as well or he'll just get a different book and stay up so late he can't function in school.
Get the child involved in some physical activities a couple of times a week if you can. Soccer, ballet, gymnastics, etc. Or just send them outside to play or take them to the park every now and then.
If you are fighting the same bedtime battle we have.....
- a friend put his daughter's lights on a timer and they go off at a set time every night no matter what
- set a kitchen timer at night and limit before bed reading time
- or take away the book/booklight/glasses/etc. when it's time to go to bed
Other than that, I can't see any reason to limit reading time.

I wish I had your problem, but what I think you're saying is that they don't want to go out and play with their friends or anything, just sit and read. I used to read a lot and my mom usually kicked me outside after a couple of hours of me reading. Even if I didn't have any one over, I'd have to go outside. My mom set a timer for 90 minutes and start it when I stepped out side. In the winter time I was outside for 35 minutes. And Do something with them: play a board game, play a game outside, have an arts and crafts box and make something with them. Bottom line: just become involved with your kids. You'll be happy you did.
God Bless!!

Thats odd. Don't you want your kids to have knowledge and good reading skills? If they absolutely read too much that it cuts into certain activities or family functions, set out a routine for them. Reading after school, reading before bedtime, etc. But reading is a healthy activity for a child and that shouldn't be taken away. Be grateful they are reading. Most kids hate it.

This hardly seems like a problem. Most children prefer to watch t.v. and play video games to reading, and reading is proven a better activity for their minds. If they read all the time and refuse to play outside, which is also good for them, you just have to set a rule about when they are required to be outside and when they can have books, similar to what parents do with kids who watch too much t.v.

why would you want your kids to stop reading? I love that my son wants to read and spend time learning rather than watching tv or playing video games. Our rule is that you have to read at least 15 minutes a night no matter what. If he chooses to read more than that, go for it! you should be thankful that they like to read and arent out running the streets

What ever you do, DON'T discourage them from reading. The fact that they want to read is a great thing. I'd rather my kids read than spend time in front of the TV.

if your kids want to read all the time, you should be thankful and let them. however, if you're concerned that they are not getting enough physical activity, simply put them on a schedule. set aside certain hours for reading and certain hours to go outside and play. but please never discourage your kids from reading. who knows, with all the knowlegde they absorb from reading, maybe someday they'll be taking care of you in your old age from the great jobs they were able to get from being so smart.

Be happy they do like to read. For some parents it is a chore getting there children to read and do homework. If they arenot exercising limit reading time to a hr or so after homework is done and go outside with them for bike rides, walks, etc.

Set up a reading time and then after that they have to go out and play. Set up play dates with other kids.
