You need to keep the conversation going because she won't volunteer anything until she gets more comfortable with you. Ask her about family, hobbies, like, dislikes, pets and anything else that isn't too personal. If she has a computer this would be a good way to converse also.

I'm pretty shy myself...especially when it comes to guys, so here's what I think:
Because she is shy, it is unlikely that she will initiate a conversation with you, therefore it is up to you to start talking. You can try by asking her questions. Not too many questions though, she might find that you are coming off too strong and that tends to be intimidating. The whole point is to make her feel comfortable enough to open up to you. If she sees that you are making an effort and you have similar taste or whatever, she will slowly but surely let her guard down.
Keep in mind that you will need to have patience while pursuing this girl. Don't expect to see her true colours in a short period of time. I hope she's worth it.....good luck !

Make sure that you are in a place where it is just the two of you and kind of quiet. Ask her to meet you in the library or something, then just tell her that you have noticed that she is kind of shy and just wanted to get to know her a little bit. If she says what do you want to know say, I don't know, maybe we could play 10 questions- you ask me anything, and I will ask you anything and we each get ten questions. Then ask her about her favorite music, color, activity, place to eat, movie etc.... Keep it safe and nice. Good luck.

Find out what she's into such as sports, music etc. and start the conversation on one of those subjects. I started a conversation once by overhearing about a sports event this person was participating in. Make sure you make eye contact and hang on her every word!

Ask about her interests. People feel more comfortable talking about what they enjoy. This will help her open up and you'll get to know her. She'll begin to feel secure around you as well.

Treat her like a Gorilla in the wild: speak softly, look down at the ground, don't make any sudden moves, and don't run away!
