Many, Many options. It may be more helpful to know what specific system or organ it effected. Try going to WebMD or comperable site and do a search that includes the system/organ effected and the word "cancer." Hopefully, it will pull up the term you are looking for.

It could be so many....where was the cancer located? Is the patient still alive? If not, perhaps the death certificate might indicate. FYI: Physician's files should be accessible for 7 years so why don't you check with his office (or did it close when he died?). Isn't there someone else in the family that would know or remember? It's difficult to answer your question....sorry!

Do you remember the part of the body it was in - I can probably figure it out if I knew this info.

The longest name I can think of is oligodendroglioma (brain tumor.)
