No. You are thinking of an ophthalmologist. An optometrist is as little as an associates degree. Look at your local community college.
An ophthalmologist is an MD that specializes in care of the eyes. An optometrist is a person that tests your eyes and makes corrective lenses.

Optometry is a great profession. Optometry school is 4 years (same as med school), however once you graduate you are ready to practice (some people do a one your residency specialty). The requirements to get in are essentially the same as med school (check with the school you are interested in). Good luck!
