He had four years of very honorable service...lots of awards and stuff. He, in a moment of anger and after being provoked punched someone higher in rank. It was in front of a lot of people. As you can tell I am military illiterate, but I notice some inconsistancies in answers and am curious if further details would help.

Just like a civil felony can be expunged, A DD can be reviewed and upgraded (might want to try to look at Senator Kerry's military record) LOL.
But it is my understanding that without the codes being upgraded first, a person cannot rejoin the military.

First you dont have to of been in a military jail or any other kind of jail for that matter to of received a Dishonorable Discharge.

And yes you can reinlist into the military.

It may take a tribunial (Military) to reveiw the case of why the discharge was a dishonorable one could be overturned.

Check the Re-Code for Status of Reinlistment/ of your DD214

Last President Ford when in office had a Blanket for Dishonorables that would clear any and all Dishonorable Discharges/and in some cases the Congress will implament that Blanket for REinlistments.

depends on the RE code. if it's a 4, then only the Army Guard MAY consider a waiver to allow him to enlist. But generally speaking an RE code of 4 means a permanent disqualification for re entry. Re Code 3 requires a waiver, and not every Branch grants waivers for the same stuff.

Generally, a dishonorable discharge is the very worst thing you can have, and will completely disqualify you from ever re-enlisting. (Most people who are dishonorably discharged also serve jail time in a military prison).

Short of a Presidential Pardon...and perhaps not even then.....no.

I'll be interested see if those claiming he or anyone discharged at that level can re-enlist can truly provide you with source cited references.

It depends on your re-enlistment code & what you were discharged for or under. You could go to the VA website and try to have it upgraded or see if you can get it upgraded. I'll try to find the website.
My ex-husband had an dishonorable for gooing AWOL, hence "ex-husband"and after 5 years he was able to re-enlist.

Dishonorable discharge eliminates any reenlistment.
