Such bleeding is called "Intraventricular Hemorrhage". The prognosis largely depends on the bleeding extent.Prognosis relates principally to the severity of the lesion. If bleeding occurs just in small area of the ventricles or inside the ventricles, there will be no further complication. If ventricles are enlarged by the blood and there is bleeding into the brain tissues around the ventricles,it is most serious and may result in long-term brain injury to the baby. Hydrocephalus (too much cerebral spinal fluid in the brain) may develop after severe IVH. IVH has a very poor prognosis with mortality rates between 80 and 100%, especially when all four ventricles are involved.

Although lani s is correct, her assumption that the bleed was from an IVH is not necessarily true. It could be any of a number of types of cerebral hemorrhage including, but not limited to: IVH, SAH, SDH, Cav Mal, intra-parenchymal, etc.

The prognosis is dependent on not only the size, location, and etiology of the bleed, but other factors as well. You mentioned that the infant stopped breathing. Did the child experience full cardio-respiratory arrest? Was CPR initiated in a timely and effective manner? How long did the seizures last?

All of these factors are important in determining the prognosis. Perhaps the most important thing to know is the result of a comprehensive neurological exam 48-72 hours post bleed. In the final analysis many mental or physical deficits cannot be known until the child fails to exhibit normal developmental milestones in the first 1-2 years of life.

depends how bad the bleed is and how bad the seizures are. If they get the bleed and seizures under control the prognosis could be excellent. On the other hand, if they can't control either of them, the prognosis could be poor. Too many unknowns.
