Nuts and dried fruit are the most common elements of trail mix.
Both have high energy. Nuts are a bit better in terms of sugar / carbohydrate release (metabolizes slower than dried fruit which is higher in sugar). If you exercise, you can work off the calories of trail mix, but it is basically a snack food, so learn to love your love handles.

There are many kinds of trail mixes aren't there! Is your trail mix sweet? Most of them are too sweet and therefore fattening, can you believe it! Bummer. You can eat this in moderation, but fruits and yogurts are best, just have it several times a week would be my suggestion. Check out the calorie count and fat count on the bag. You can also find some low fat good crackers too.

I love to snack on trail mix too... here i did some research with a healthy recipe ......
Most pre-packaged trail mixes are loaded with sodium and hidden sugars. Not our version! Good for your heart and friendly to your taste buds, this trail mix is a winner and one you don't have to feel guilty about snacking on.
Make a large batch, seal in individual zipper-lock pouches and you'll have ready-made, good-for-you snacks you can feel good about.
Healthy Trail Mix
3/4 oz. unsalted pretzels
1 Tbsp. walnuts
1 Tbsp. sliced almonds
1/3 Tbsp. raisins
Combine pretzels, raisins, walnuts and almonds. Serve.
Makes 1 serving. Nutritional values per serving: 190 calories, 7g fat (0.5g sat), 5g protein, 27g carbohydrate, 2g fiber, 0mg cholesterol, 1mg sodium and 6g sugar.
From The Heart Smart Diet Plan on eDiets.
Hope This Helps!!!

My opinion of food in general is that nothing will make you fat! It is the amount of food, your portion, that determines how many calories you are putting into your body. There are foods that are better for you that you may eat more of, such as fresh fruits, vegetables...any lower calorie foods..There are other foods that are not so good for you such as fried foods, desserts high in fat and sugar, anything with higher calories you need to eat less of.
Trail mix , depending on the ingredients , eaten in sensible portions shouldn't add on weight as long as you are eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise. Always remember to read packaging to see what's in the food you are about to consume!

Trail mix is intended as a HIGH engery snack, it is loaded with carbs, sugars and fats. It is intended to be eaten while you are burning a lot of calories not just as a lay-around snack.
