Want it to be reasonably masculine, yet bright, airy, contemporary. Any new colors out there?

For contemporary looks, white is often the best. If you want light and bright, white is good also. It's clean-looking. Then you have the option to punch it up with accessories in hot colours like cobalt blue, or paprika or whatever. And you can change the look quickly and easily with just the accessories, incl. drawer handles etc.

Why not try sage (it's in the green family), looks very nice on a wall and gives the area an open and airy feel to it. If there is a bold color that you like you could put it on one wall and paint the others off white or white.

If you want contemporary colors...and I know this makes no sense... go RETRO . Aqua is really a with it color. Check the appliances.Everything is with the 50's colors. You won't go wrong, and everything will be reasonably easy to find. Trust me!

My choice is still orange, if you can take the brighter tone, if not the deeper orange, that will be nice for a contemporary kitchen.

yellow tone, or even a nice beige. I used a nice color called "Comforting" (Behr paint color at Home Depot) to paint my whole second floor and it looks awesome. Check it out.

My personal choice would be a lime green, but it depends alot on what the cabinets, counters and fixtures are like.

The lime green would look good with sleek white cabinets, black countertops and chrome/brushed aluminum fixtures IMHO.
