Many of these answers are great so some of this I am just repeating myself, but I will do so anyhow as there are a few things I would like to add from my travels to China.

Medically you need to make sure you have Hepatitis A and B shots which are series of shots you get instead of a "1 time shot". Once you have these, then you are set for life. In China in many areas you can go to order milk and it will be steaming hot like coffee. This is there way of pasteurizing the milk. So you want to be careful with dairy products over there. If you are staying at a very upscale hotel, that is different.

One thing I don't believe anyone else mentioned is that you need to get a Typhoid shot. This one is very important and you can ask your doctor, they will tell you the same thing.

Entry Requirements are you need a passport of course and a tourist visa. If you are staying over 30 days it is completely different. You need to get this prior to departure and if I remember correctly (I'm not at work right now to verify this) it needs to be valid for so long prior to entry. Every country is so different from one another on visa entry requirements. You also need a transit visa for any stop in China; even if it is ONLY a change of planes or even just a stop you still need a visa for that. Check with the Visa Consulate if you have other questions on this.

I have been to Europe, S. America, Caribbean, Mexico and Asia and I must say China is one of my top most memorable trips! You are going to love it! If you have a chance or on a return trip try and go to Beijing and see the Great Wall....worth the trip as well as Xi'An also worth the Journey!

Medical: Make sure your tetanus is up to date, you may want to get Hepatitis A and B shots because of the sanitation conditions.

Legal: An entry visa, you will have to apply for it to your nearest China consulate. And it is required before entering China, you could be deported. If you are visiting for less than 30 days, this will be all you need. If longer, read the advisory.

Below is the U.S. State Dept. advisory for China

Have a good trip

You need a visa to enter China, Hong Kong or Macau. Typical is single entry L type visa. Those are easy to get. If you want to get a 1 year multiple entry Visa, its a little harder on your first attempt. If you have relatives, property or have travel many times in the past, then its easier.

I would definitely get my Hepatitis A and B shots. I am one of those people who will at from street vendors (the ones that look's clean anyway) so its important to get it. I think regardless, you should get it because while the restaurants may look clean on the out side, who knows what goes on in the kitchens.

You will need a visa to get into the country. You generally cannot get one after you arrive so you need to get one before you come. The documents and medical checks you will need depend on the type of visa you will have.

If you are trying to get a 1 year visa you will need a comprehensive medical check but it needs to be from a Chinese approved medical facility so check with the embassy on which places are acceptable.

For shorter visas you don't need any other medical checks but I recommend a full set of vaccinations, just in case.

If you intend to visit Hong Kong from China and then return to China, i.e. Beijing you will need a multi entry Visa, because you will have used your single entry when you first arrived. I know it sounds silly because Hong Kong belongs to China now, but even Chinese people need a visa to visit Hong Kong. I assume Macau wouldbe the same. Check before you leave your country of origin.

When I went I didn't have to get any shots but it all depends on where you are traveling. Some areas may be prone to higher levels of malaria.

Make sure you contact the U.S. embassy or consulate by email closest to where you are staying. Inform them what areas you are traveling and where you are staying, that way if there is an emergency with you or at home they will know where to find you.

You'll need a visa issued by the Chinese government. Check www.state.gov for guidelines. You can get this visa by contacting the nearest Chinese consulate, and you'll need to get this visa before you go.

As for medical, if you are otherwise healthy, you will want to make sure your tetanus shot is up to date, and if you are traveling outside of cities, you may want to get the vaccine for Hepatitis A.

I came here 3 months ago and didn't have any medical issues.
Never even went to get a check-up. It kind of depends on how long you are going to be here and why.
Good luck!!
