This less or more disrespectful than the classic "silent treatment"? Step mom/American sponsors 5 kids from husband's 1st marriage to immigrate to USA. She has no bio kids/1st marriage. Step kids & husband's 2nd language is English. Sometimes when angry at either parent the kids use silent treatment. Answering adults & others only in nods, grunts or not at all. Step mom when alone with angry kid gets it worse. Silence/they speak but not to her, and in their language (the husband/their father also does this angry or not). Husband almost always working says “Absolutely not!” to family/couples counseling, & “I can't do anything about it! Handle it!” None of this occurred until after this couple married & kids moved into the US. This is new behavior from husband/kids (as of 10 MOs ago) for the step mom. Is it all her fault, the Dad's, kids who are 13+? As to language power trips what about American society which does not encourage immigrants to assimilate as much as in the past?

Just looked at the first answer: Can you imagine going to order food or doing simple tasks if Lieland's ideas became law? I think she/he should stick to what she speaks--moron. Ellie you have a great idea. They speak Fulani (an abusure west african dialect) and Arabic. Wanna come over and learn those with me? I'd think after about 4 yrs I should be able to surprise them by listening in huh? lol

I think people should speak the native language of what ever county they live in regardless.

Zoe what I say still stands regardless of your opinion. It would be MORE difficult to complete simple tasks if you are unable to speak the native language spoken where you live think about it. And please if you're going to talk **** about me at least spell my name correctly its LEILAND not LIELAND. Thanks.

People speak to each other in their 1st language. I used to teach on an Indian Reservation. Same age group you are dealing with. I learned to speak Choctaw. You should learn a little of the language spoken in your home. At least they speak to you in English. I've noticed people are so paraniod when another language comes out. One day at the store two women were speaking in Choctaw. The first lady said "Do you want to buy this book?". I understood her, but anyone else would have assumed they were talking about them. But I am educated and not paranoid!

5. English and Civics
In general, you must show that you can read, write, and speak basic English. You also must have a basic knowledge of U.S. history and government (also known as “civics”). You will be required to pass a test of English and a test of civics to prove your knowledge.

The above was found on this site:

Americans have no issue with people who speak their family language, at home.. but people who come here, and live, need to speak english, even if it is broken english..
like our ancestors did, when they came - legally - and become AMERICANS.. not whatever whatever americans.. They dropped the whatever whatever.. and called themselves AMERICANS!!! PERIOD!!!

sounds like those kids need a good old fashioned spanking. they should learn English, it will be easier on them in the long run. but those kids should learn some manners, and respect even thought it's there step mom.

Learn their language, but don't tell them until
you really speak and understand it.
I would turn my hearing off to.
