There is no breed that is by nature mean, Dogs only become mean due to Human error , neglect or mistreatment. P.S. I have a Pitbull and have had 2 before her ,none of them mean that is media hype and ignorant banter.

That's a really good question. A lot of people believe the garbage uneducated people claim. I can't give you a straight answer, but here are the facts:

If you are a home owner and want home owner's insurance, you cannot have (or admit to having):
a Staffordshire Terrier
a Doberman
a Rottweiler
a Shar pei
a German Shepherd.
These breeds are on most insurance company's blacklist. For whatever reason, they have been dubbed "dangerous" dogs.

However, according to the American Humane Society, the dog that has bitten more people than any other specific breed is the Labrador Retriever. In the mid 1980's, it was the Cocker Spaniel - for 5 straight years. Yet, neither of these breeds is on the insurance blacklist.

Why? Because people don't generally hear about the attacks made by labs and cockers. That's the only reason. Reporters want to make sensational headlines - so they run with the pack, so to speak and will add to the misconceptions that it is a dog BREED rather than a PERSON's MISTREATMENT of a dog that creates a dangerous animal.

In my opinion, there are no dangerous dogs - just bad owners.

But don't take my word for it, read the article in the link and you'll get the idea. The author was obviously a well educated person and wasn't interested in following in the footsteps of all the other bad reporters of the world.

There is not really a "mean" breed. We as humans in history have bred dogs for specific purposes. Usually when a dog is considered mean it is usually because the owners do not fully understand the way to handle and train their breed.

Cocker Spaniels are known for biting- but so are labs!

Many people have a great image of labs (which is usually deserved) but then people get stupid and lose their common sense and try to approach labs without any caution. Labs will still defend their territory from intruders even if they are normally a lovable family pet.

Small dogs are often biters because their owners often do not discipline them with the consistency that larger breeds often recieve.

Bad breeding can also give breeds a bad name. The Chow is a classic example. This is an old and distiquished breed that fell victim to bad breeding in (especially in the 1970's) and now many Chows ARE short tempered because of bad genetics.

Pitbulls have a bad reputation that is really not deserved. Pitbulls were bred for human entertainment but can make great family pets. Unfortunalty many of the horror stories you hear about are the result of bad ownership and not a bad dog. That same dog in the hands of a resposible owner could have been a wonderful dog.

Each breed has their own special traits. And just like people- each breed will sometimes produce a puppy that is "not right in the head" which no amount of good ownership can fix- but that can happen in any breed.

Ok people, read below about a pitbull....they are not an aggressive breed its the people who have them....the most common and reported bites come from the Cocker Spaniel.

In recent years, pit bulls have gained more than just a foothold in the public awareness. Unscrupulous breeding and negative media attention have resulted in many apartment complexes, neighborhoods and even counties imposing bans on the breed, citing them as "inherently dangerous" to the public.
But did you know that pit bulls, despite the fact that they were originally bred to fight with each other, were also bred to be trustworthy and friendly to people? These dogs actually earned the nickname "nursemaid's dog," because they were so reliable with young children.

Today, however, the breed often attracts the worst kind of dog owners--those who are only interested in them for fighting or protection. It's a shame what has happened to this loyal and affectionate breed-but as the pit bull population has increased so rapidly, shelters are now struggling to deal with an overflow of image-plagued, hard-to-place dogs. And despite its illegality, people are still training and breeding pit bulls to participate in dog fights in cities and towns across the country.

I have been dealing with animals of all kinds for the past 11 years, i trained numerous breeds of dog and had close encounters with some really mean dogs. Here is the thing, all those 'mean' dogs were abused and brought up badly, no animal goes out of its way to be mean, that is a only a human behavior. There was this cocker spaniel that was going off the deep end, i found out that it had been locked in a toilet its whole life, never went for walks, was always scolded and never loved. I have 2 Bull terriers ( reputed to be one of meanest mutt) that lives together with 4 cats in perfect harmony, you do the math.

In my life time so far i've owned 5 APBT , had taken care of my brother in laws Rottie , owned a GSD . Growing up in my child hood I had a Collie. Guess what dog bit ,the Collie. She took my friends face and put in her mouth, and left her with scars. She was not a mean dog ,but old age made her cranky.Any dog can bite .

One of my APBT is sitting at my feet right now ,she's not mean. I know i'm not answering your question.

No breed of dog is inherintely mean. There's many factors that goes into a dogs tempermant. Such as breeding the right dogs, socialization during the puppies critical moths after birth ,proper home enviroment , being in non abusive homes ,loving owners.Dogs in general are not born mean ,it's the bad breeders and bad owners who create mean dogs. Dogs are pack animals and want to be with their pack.Sometimes there are dogs who are born unbalanced and you can't help those dogs.

By far the best guard dog and meanest dog I have ever Had believe it or not is my Dachshund beagle mix, ( Looks like a Dachshund with a 2inch lift kit).

Ring the door bell ,he trys to go thru the door. Walk by my fence he goes nuts, barks, growls, salivates, ears, tail and all of the hair on back is stands straight up and the closer you get the crazier and meaner he gets.

Dont even think about petting him if you value limbs.

Everyone we know is scared to come in the house if the dog is in the house.

HE trys to eats the mail man, and any of our friends that are Male. He does not like men at all,

One of my friends named Guy came over to my house. We introduced him to the dog while he was sitting down. We brought in the dog, he barked alittle and growled .After a while the dog settled down and Guy was even able to feed Chance ( the Dog ) a few snacks from the table. I thought the dog was going to be ok with my friend untill Guy came into the kitchen was talking to me . When my friend Guy talks he moves his hands, Big mistake the dog attack him before we able to stop him he jumped up on Guy and Chance the dog tried to bite him and was hanging from his shirt. I got the dog off of him. WE where lucky the dog only got his shirt, and not him. Now I put the dog the yard when my friends come over.

We call now call Chance ( Psyco Dog ).

I guess if you where bred to go down badger and fox holes you would be mean too.

not my pittbull. She's the sweetest. Just wants to be hugged and cuddled all the time. I'm not sure there is a particular breed of dog that's mean. It's the owners and how they treat their animals.
