I didn't realize that a question and its details could not be edited once I submitted, so I'll add a little more to the question. Keep in mind that this is all theoretical, not something I've actually done or would do, but just as someone who has never served others, I don't know what impact it might have. Here are some things to consider: What if the server was terrible and they were going to get a poor tip otherwise? What if the server was very flirty the entire time? Would it matter if the server was actually ugly, or would it be equally offensive to an attractive girl? I personally believe that it would be worth such a large tip in exchange for an insult, no matter how bad. It was just something I got to thinking about, so keep in mind this isn't something I've done. The people who create edgy comedies aren't #$% just for thinking up inappropriate material. If you can think of other questions or modifications, feel free to add on to the topic, as I'm sure I didn't cover everything.

goldwing, the reason I made mention of edgy comedy was because in my original post, I was called a poopyface just for thinking of doing this. I feel you can think of something bad without being bad and that was my evidence.

Actually, I am really shocked you know what etiquette even means.

Certainly not. In applying proper etiquette to all aspects of living, one would not openly insult another human - no matter what. For all you know, the server could be recovering from the loss of a loved one. In case you are not aware, waiters and waitresses are rarely compensated for bereavement leave and few can afford to take the time off they need to heal.

No excuse for laziness or poor service? I have a flash for you. Yes there is. It's called double duty when someone calls in sick. Covering more tables than is reasonably possible while providing the attention that each customer deserves is not the fault of the server - it is the fault of the manager who quite literally doesn't give a flying flip how overtaxed the workers are.

In the future, stay out of public places until you learn some basic manners. Your edgy comedy is certainly not that when it reaches the eyes of someone you don't even know.

Do the world a favor and have yourself neutered so as not to perpetuate your socially defective genes.

It is very obvious without you mentioning it that you've never been a server. You would be surprised at how hard that job actually is, especially dealing with a**holes like you and the people that seem to think they are the only table that person is serving. If I still had a server job and received that tip with the note I would say "Thanks a**hole" and have it arranged for you to get "great" service the next time you came in. If the rest. is really packed and you can tell the server is working her rear end off and keeping a smile on her face the whole time you should always give a good tip. If she's a bit**, she ignores you completely and theres hardly anyone in the rest. then no tip or a small tip is acceptable. Remember that these people do not make min. wage without those tips although when I was a server at Golden Corral I actually averaged more an hr with my tips than my sister who is a paralegal so I guess it all depends on the person doing the job.

Be aware that waiters spit in other people's food and do all other types of nasty stuff if they don't like the person they are serving. Be careful; they have the power over your meal. Also, if you DID write that to the waiter, he would not know what he did wrong because you do not express your opinions. Or he wouldn't care and just use the $50, which is not your intention at all.

ummmmmm.....to answer your question, that isn't nice and can probably get you sued (i think).
it might not, but its just a precaution :)

Although a huge tip will be nice, the waiter's feelings will be hurt because of what you said. You should give them a normal or below required tip and tell them that the service was good or bad. Being rude and nasty is never good!

I hope I helped!

You still shouldn't be kidding around about doing something like that to someone who obviously works hard for her money and still makes very little. Waiting on people and cleaning up after them SUCKS and usually people don't do it unless they have no other choice.

If you need to put other people down to make yourself feel better do it somewhere the person has a chance to say something back or hit you for free

a tip is a tip...i would be thrilled with $50 regardless of the note...even though it would be a little offensive. if i made enough impact for them to splurge 50 bucks i would be proud of my ugly face! lol

If i were a waitress I would just think that you are weird, and like "Whatever!". But $50 tip is nice.
