Is it difficult to be approved to work here if you are awaiting processing on your residency paperwork?

Don't wait for the green card that could take a year or so, apply for a work permit through INS first.
It's not difficult at all.

You should also apply for a working permit or green card. The government does not want to support you, and in most cases will provide a working visa.
