I am a 19 year old male. Ever since I can remember I have had chest pains that happen at random times during the day. Even if I am doing nothing but sitting in class or eating. It always happens so suddenly on the left-center of my chest and effects that lung, or I assume so from not being able to breathe in. The pain is minor, but increases with the more air I breathe. Usually around 1/4 the capacity of my lungs the pain is unbareably sharp like I am being stabbed. The pain always goes away, but usually after 15-20 seconds. It used to be only once every few weeks. Lately it has been 2 or 3 times a week, and on some occasions recently, it has been that many times a day. What can be the matter? Physically I am in great shape, I lift weights every day, run, and eat healthy. I have no asthma or any medical conditions that I know of. I am afraid to go to a doctor for these pains. Please help.

Sounds like some sort of chest wall pain

However, nobody here can really tell you. You'll have to go to a doctor if you really want to find out.

You sound young and fit and unlikely to be having heart problems. It sounds like a lung thing if it comes when you breathe.

Okay, first I need to say that there is no easy answer. The fact that you lift weights needs to be considered. First, when you are having these pains try to contract and relax the muscles of your chest. Does this make things worse? If so then the pain may well be muscular. If there is no real discernable difference, then it's not muscle pain.

Anxiety can cause this type of chest pain, and shortness of breath as well, and those are certainly treatable. But a heart problem can cause those same symptoms, and though you are young and healthy you need to get some answers that can't be found on lline. Talk to your doctor, get some tests done (usually painless) and get solid facts that should help you to understand the cause of the chest pain.

Don't mess around. You've got a lot of years ahead.

First, fear not! What you describe does not sound as if it is cardiac related but it also cannot be completely ruled out at this point either, however the frequency is cause for concern. You have been experiencing this for quite some time now and you should mention it to your physician.

There are less serious conditions which may need to be addressed at this point. Only your physician can rule such things out. Buck up young man, make an apointment with your Doc and put this thing to rest once and for all. I wish you the best!

see a cardiologist and rule out any heart problem. Don't waste anymore time. Lately all you hear on the news is young people who died of an undetected heart problem. Some are football players, swimmers, etc. It might be something else but rule that out first. Have you told your parents? Don't be afraid of going to the Dr. If you have a problem you need to get treatment. DO you want to live ?!!!!! Don't be a fool If your parents wont take you go your self. If i bothers you that much go to the ER before its too late. I m not trying to scare you but the symptoms you discribe could be serious. Good luck

It means that you're about to die!
The Aliens have taken up residence in your chest.
They will soon hatch and eat you from the inside out!
But then again, you might have a hernia or some other internal problem.
Jim Kiick thought he was heahtly too (just because he held the world record in the mile run). But he dropped dead while jogging.
Have it checked by a Doctor to be sure.

Yes, I also have a friend who is 24 and has a heart condition that runs in the family. He runs 5 miles a day, lift weights etc. U need to go to a doctor, look up family history in heart problems. But u need to get it checked out.......so that can be fixed, prevented etc.

My son had the same thing from about age 3 or so. The doc described what was going on and said that it wasn't anything to worry about. Sorry, don't remember what the diagnosis was.

He's 35 now, and a pilot in the Air force. The pains went away in his early 20s. I think your doc will clear you, too. Go see him.

You need to see him. You could have atrial fibrillation, if that's not treated you can get a stroke. Even though you're healthy and fit, that doesn't mean you can't get a heart attack and age doesn't play a role in it either. Your much better off knowing what's wrong, than going through another week worrying, that even might be dangerous too. You could have a clot, if that goes into your lung you also could be toast. ASAP, please and Get Well.

I have that sometimes...you probably just pulled a muscle in your chest, especially since you lift weight so often.

Go to the doctor. All he/she will do is check you out...its not a big deal.
