the ceiling fan when it is on, the vacuum cleaner, the garage door when its going up or down, brooms, plastic bags, telephones ringing and more but he won't bark when someone comes to the door. What is it about all the other things and why doesn't he bark when someone knocks on the door? I don't get it!

Shelties are like that but I can't figure out why he won't bark at the door when someone knocks. Shelties are wonderful dogs and are very good around kids. They are a little high strung and possessive about the parents. I think it is because they were bred for sheep herding that the things that move make him bark. It probably makes him rather anxious. I don't know how old he is but he will calm down once he is around 4 or 5 years old. Good Luck

Maybe being a herding dog he is following his instinct to chase moving things. As fas as the telephone, maybe the ring setting you have it on hurts his ears or something, change the ring setting and see if that works.
He must feel real secure and doesn't feel the need to bark at the door because he knows your there to protect him.
Just a thought.
good luck

Watch the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Milan and you will get all sorts of pointer from his show. He did a show on a Sheltie that did just that and in very little time he showed the owner how to correct the problem without getting angry, loosing their temper and being the pack leader. Good Luck

He is a fun dog and a bit confused, should of gotten a Shepard or doby if you wanted a barker before biter.
My friends had a Sheltie and if you pointed a flashlight at the floor he would jump and bite at it. Just be glad he is a good dog.
Funny.

who knows...but one thing is for sure, shelties are herding dogs. That means anything that MOVES they want to herd. Its really funny too..they are not guard dogs or anything, but if something is moving they want to try to run and herd it where they think they should make it go, which is even more hilarious since they aren't trained to herd anything but the instinct is so strongly bred into them, that they can't help themselves..so they still try, despite not knowing exactly what they are doing or where they are trying to herd something to,let alone how to do it. Try raking or running around in your yard and see if your dog chases you or the rake..its so funny.

Different wave lengths. Then maybe the dog is just having fun!

Perhaps he has no concept in his mind as for what those things could possibly be or what on earth they're doing. It just might be his way of 'sorting things out'. =)
