There is a special type of dog collar that helps with this problem...
Your vet might have it, or if not, go to your local pet shop.
One of my neighbours had the same problem, and she got one of them which she only puts on her dog at night... It's done wonders...She now manages to sleep again!

There are several reasons why dogs bark. To stop the problem you need to find the reason why he is barking such as:

Is he barkin AT something? (Is he outside where he will see cats, cars, etc?)- If this is the case he is probably just being a good watch dog or he is saying he doesn't like to be outside by himself.

Is he in the house but in another room? If this is the case he might be trying to get your attention because he doesn't like to be alone.

If he is in the house you could try to bring him into the room with you. Also he might be insecure so you could try crate training. most dogs have a "denning" instinct and they actually like to have a "spot" that is their own.

My Aussie Shepard mix also when through a phase where she howled and barked when I left her. I did buy a shock collar from Walmart since the she was doing it to get attention. She only wore if for about a week and the collar trained her not to bark.

Bark collars are specially designed to only shock when it feels the vibration of the dog's bark. They usually start out at a mild shock (like static electricity) and escalade slowly if the dog doesn't stop barking. It then resets to the lowest setting after a certain amount of time of no barking.

But before you get a training collor for your dog- make sure there is no other underlying situation that needs to be addressed.

have you tried to put a wind up clock in the bed with him or near him this works. Or even a little play toy that looks like him this might even help is hard to say. But I had 1 that just would not stop barking and I did put a wind up clock in his bed and it did work for me.

First you have to answer.. do you give the poor doggie much attention.. They NEED desperately attentin.....Dogs bark for many reasons. It's their way of saying, "Hey, I'm here! Come over and see me!" to their human families and other pooch pals. Dogs also bark to warn their owners about intruders on their turf--and to scare these intruders away.
Canines bark to get attention, too. When you are watching your favorite TV show, has your dog ever parked himself in front of you and went "WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!" until you threw his tennis ball?

I agree with the previous answerer that said that dogs have to socialize. It is perfectly understandable for a dog to want company. They hang around in family packs...it is how they are wired. Your dog wants to know that she is still part of the family.

Since she is YOUR dog, bring her into your room at night to sleep. Pay more attention to her during the day. You got the dog for companionship to begin with. Just recognize that it's a two way street.

hey
The reason he is barking is that he is either scared from the dark and he needs to be secure. Make it so that he can sleep with someone he loves or to be sleeping with his back to the wall.

He also could be or have been hurt or beaten. He could be hearing the noises of the outdoors. Have him sleep next to you

okay..This may not be the kind of answering you are looking for and it may not even be good advice. But, my dog will bark at night if she hears anything. But, if I just pick her up and put her in bed with me -- nothing bothers her.

Bring him in the house and let him sleep on your bed with you. If that's not an option you'll consider, then find a loving home for him.
