Four years of college with a pre-med (helps getting into med school) major; then, it's off to med school. Some medical schools are 3 years (not as easy as it sounds: you do your first year work in the morning and your second year work in the afternoons of the same year, plus the other two years after that); OR 4 years (one year at a time); then, you do a couple of years or residency and work up to time on your "specialty," which in your case would be either ER or a specialty in surgery, which is called an internship, usually two years.

You're looking at a long road...much sleep deprivation. Think you're up to it? Hope so!! :)

If you actually want to be the DOCTOR in the ER or OR, you're going to have to go through the whole college, medical school, internship & residency deal just like any other M.D. There are other jobs working in the ER or OR (medical technician, for example) that you can do with less than a 4 year degree if you're just interested in working in that environment.
