Sloth follows this rule. When the going gets tough, run. Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow. Sloth does slightly less than the right thing. It doesn't bother returning something to the lost-and-found, but pockets it instead; it doesn’t tell the clerk he has undercharged. Sloth has never written a thank-you note, sent a birthday card on time. All of this simply takes too much effort. Sloth hits the snooze alarm, hits the remote control . . . Sloth cheats on exams, drinks straight from the milk carton and leaves exactly two sheets on the toilet roll so that it will have to be replaced by the next poor soul who finds out too late that the remaining paper is nothing more than a mirage. Are you?

Sloth is a type of laziness, when you willfully fail to do your duty- to self, to others or to God. I don't think it's particularly hard to know when you are guilty of it, as you usually feel guilty for something you have not done and know you should have done. Being inconsiderate of others is a form of sloth as well. Refusing or failing to help somebody, when it is well within your ability, is a form of sloth. Sloth is a sin against charity- but that doesn't mean you are off the hook just because you drop spare change into the Salvation Army kettle at Christmas. Sins against charity also include using or taking more than your share, so that somebody else has to do without.
Sloth is not so much what you did, it's more of the good you failed to do- good that you knew you should do, you could do, and just didn't do, for whatever excuses and reasons you want to give yourself.
