your question is very incorrect - there are more good priests then there are pedophiles. unfortunately, they just get more press. what they did was vile, loathsome and disgusting and they will have their judgment day.
unfortunately though - this does not only happen in the roman catholic church - all denominations have been victimized by this demon. the Rcc just happens to be the one most people love to shout about and judge.

I looked into this a few years ago and it seems that pedophiles are attracted to the priesthood because they think that being in a position where they will have to be celibate will control their urges. Unfortunately the opposite is true and what actually happens is they are put in a position of power that very few people are willing to question, they are in contact with children day to day and in many cases over night or even in the priests care for extended periods of time which gives them opportunity and temptation. The fact that the catholic church protected pedophile priests over their victims for so many years also gave them a feeling of safety and a lack of accountability making it even more easy for them to offend. so In conclusion it isn't that priests turn into pedophiles, it is that pedophiles are attracted to the priest hood either to try and stop them selves from offending or to afford them selves the best possible to protection while offending.
On a side note, not all priests are pedophiles but the profession does attract a unproportionate number of pedophiles than any other profession.

The ultimate example of how violence and control always go downhill. The priest is the unquestioned representative of ultimate authority (God's right hand) put in charge of teaching (disciple-ing or 'discipline') the weakest humans (children). The situations were kept quiet so long because they fit perfectly into the System. If the children had been killing priests, the System would have made an instant Spectacle of the matter and made sure that there was no repercussions on the Church or it's practices. Since the violence was flowing from the strong to the weak, look how long it took to find out the truth.

Because pedophiles seek positions where they can gain access to vunerable children.
Examples: Sports'coaches, scout leaders, Big Brother volunteers, teachers, & in some cases they will even procreate their own victims(parents sexually abusing their children).
Anybody familiar with the Catholic priesthood will know how easily accessable children are. Just in the Mass alone, they have easy access to them; children serve on the altars & they sing in the choirs, & then you have all the children that are sitting all throughout the congregation itself, during the Mass.
It is also the priest's responsibility to teach children their catechism & prepare them for the Sacraments of Holy Communion, Confession, & Confirmation. Some priests even teach in Catholic schools.
There have also been cases in other Christian churches where clergy have been caught sexually abusing children also, & ditto for the clergies of other religions. However, the other cases(the non-Christian ones in particular)very rarely get much media attention.

Easy access to kids. Like a teacher or anyone else . Nuns are getting raped, Kids are being raped. Religion are just like cults and should be banned. God is just like Santa something kids belive in. Any adult that believed in God has a low IQ for sure. Cave men invented religion.
