my friend just gave me a quaker parrot and his feathers are all fluffy and funny looking and he keeps picking at them, but for the most part he seems really happy and is very talkative. I was just wondering if this is normal and how long it will last

Hi,
What a wonderful pet! I had a Quaker, Sherbert. What a sweet little girl she was. I lost her to a stroke as she was quite old. Anyway, Quakers tend to be preeners and will over preen if not given enough toys to play with. They love toys and toys that are fuzzy or furry so they can preen them. They are also subject to skin problems as well, so make sure you watch for mites and the diet.
Hope that helps! Good luck with your new sweetie!

I have a tiel and a conure. Both are molting most all the time. Sometimes heaver then other times. They both are always grooming them selfs. But never have fluffed feathers. If the bird stands in one spot a lot and don't move much and is not eating like you think it should be I would say with fuffed feathers the bird is sick.

You know it would not hurt you to take the little guy to see the vet just for a checkup. Bout 30 bucks and you will be at ease. Or you will know what is wrong and beable to take care of him correctly. I took my birds to the vet just because I wanted to when I first got them.

I had a parrot for years before i left to go to college. My parrot never went through a molting period. Our chickens went through a molting period, where they lost most of their feathers, later they got new ones. You may look for lice or mites, or you may could let a vet look at him. Hope this helps.

if the feathers are frayed and there are bald areas then it is probably feather picking (can be an illness or a mental thing) if he is preening alot and there are feathers on the ground but you do not see bald areas then it is molting

It may mean he needs more nutrients why dont you give this fella multi vit and try him on different varieties of fruit and veg before it affects its physical health. If he seems timid about trying new foods why dont you mix the old food with the new in his bowl.
