Very good question. My dog will poop on my carpet in the night time if it is raining out side. I HATE IT!!! I clean it up before my husband can see it because he will prolly kill my dog. I love my dog and she loves me unconditionally! I don't want her to poop on the floor when I am asleep .I think it is EXTREMELY discustiong .She knows she has done wrong because she will avoid me. I'll put my hands on my hips and tell her BAD and she will shake and act pitiful. But I have to love her unconditionally too.Its her only occasional Flaw.

Isn't it a shame that we were born, uneducated..and not knowing everything?
The problem is, many people are attracted to these great furry companions, assuming that they come already trained or can simply train themselves..We don't have the benefit of role models to learn from, such as we do when raising children, but are faced with this adorable little critter that we have no idea how to train..or even that they do need training!
Today's society isn't a reading culture, but relies mostly on peer influence..so what is learned on the streets is mostly worthless (at best) or harmful to our dogs....
I don't see any hope for change in the future..as kids are not gonna be taught pet care in schools, and local SPCA's have too little money to promote public education...
This forum, where experienced pet owners are willing to help each other, will, at best, make only a ripple in a pond...But it is a step in the right direction...As more and more of the public becomes computer literate..this and similar forums may become the main source for pet care education...
I write children's books for the ASPCA educational program..but I have a feeling that this forum is more widely read..
That is why I am here, and I'm sure is the reason there are so many people trying to educate the pet owner on this forum..
all dogs CAN be potty trained, unless they are senile and have lost bowel control...but, it is a skill that has to be learned by owner and pet..

Since you didn't elaborate, I can only assume you are asking why the dogs are trained to papers in the house rather than to go outside.
I know several elderly people with dogs that are trained to papers because it is too difficult - as well as dangerous - for them to venture outside with their dogs several times a day. I know a disabled person who trained his dog to papers and he keeps absorbant cat litter on the papers to soak up all the liquid. He then picks up the papers and litter from his wheelchair and throws it in the trash.
I know people in highrise apartment buildings that keep a dog for a sense of security - as well as companionship - who do not have a place outside where the dog can do his duty, so yeah, the dog is trained to a doggy box or papers.
And then there are those who are in the process of house training a puppy. It happens. A lot of puppies and even grown dogs don't want to go out in the rain - even when the owner is standing in the rain and coaxing them to come out. Usually, a grown dog will hold it until the rain stops.
There are all manner of reasons for it. But I have to wonder why you are such a busybody that you think it's your business. Did it ever occur to you to ask the person or people you are referring to what the issue is?

My dog (chihuahua/boston terrier) mix is trained to poop on pads in the bathroom. Her poop is smaller than my pinky. When she poops outside, it's harder to find in bark, landscaping, etc. She also doesn't like to go outside when it's raining (it's actually the sound of the rain that bothers some dogs).
Frankly, poop is the easy part - the pee is tough. She's trained now, but I lost a carpet! Doesn't matter. The love she gives outweighs any inconvenience.
I'm sure if I had a larger dog, pooping inside wouldn't be an option.
I'm just hoping from the phrasing of your question that you haven't had a bad experience! Good luck!

I've met people like this. It's disgusting.
I have no idea how anyone could be that lazy to sit and smell it rather than clean it up.
I can't understand why people refuse to clean a cats litter box yet complain or apologize about the smell that gags me at the front door when I go visit.
Same people are totally amazed to discover that I have 2 cats. And can't get over the fact that there's no litter box smell anywhere in my house including the bathroom where 2 litter boxes sit.
It's inexcusable and just nasty to keep animals in filth.

When My dogs were very young, mistakes were accepted, discussed, and forgotten!
If my adult dogs did anything like that, I would KILL them!
unless it was obvious that they were sick, then we would discuss it as though they were pups.
I have had elderly dogs, and well, like elderly humans, **** HAPPENS. I try to come home a cou[ple times a day as I see that start to happen, But when a dog gets to be 12 /14 years old, most every thing breaks down and kindness says to put him or her down. That is really hard to do.
But I have levels of toleration!!! If we had a DIRTY dog, it would not be aloud to stay in my home!!!!!!!! Accidents happen to the best of us, but filth is not acceptable!

Contrary to a previous answer......the dogs not stupid, the owner must be. An accident may happen once in a while, but for someone to allow a dog to crap in the house time after time is just ignorance and or stupidity. If you don't have someplace for the dog to crap other than your kitchen, living room, or bedroom.....then you shouldn't own a dog.

Either they get rat dogs that are hard to train, or they are dead-beat owners...which means they are gone more than they are home and the dog has no choice!!!!!!!
People who have such little time should not have dogs, and if you do...get one you can potty train!!!!!!!
Doggie litter-boxes are a JOKE!!!

i assume you mean not in a litter box or training pad. this is because the person does not want the responsibly of a dog, and was raised in a way that doesn't take part in cleanliness. when you were raised in a dirty home you will keep a dirty home.
