Because not every country really understands the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) principle.
To set things right, Russia, not the United States, have the highest number of nuclear warheads. At the height of the Cold War, the Soviets have approx 16,000 compared to the 5,000 plus the United States have. Combined together, its enough to kill both side, along with the rest of the world at least 20 times over.
US and Russia (Soviets in the Cold War) have shown restrain, because leaders on both sides knew that to use one is to sign their own death warrant, along with the rest of the world. Hence, nuclear weapons are there solely and primarily as a deterrant.
Balance of power is, again, wrongly preceived by too many people. Its is not the number of missiles, ships, or aircraft we (or anyone) have to hold an edge over others. Balance of power is about stability, a counter-balance, to let any potential adversary know that if they push their luck too far, they might not be able to deal with something else. This forces people to act rationally.
The United States has never used its nuclear power status (specifically, its nuclear arsenal) in its foreign policy to threaten any country. Put in another way, we are not that crazy.
The Iranian government, or more specifically, under the current leadership, has clearly shown its intention for its nuclear program. That is the reason why the United States is opposing Iran's nuclear program. Similarly, North Korea's leadership is as unstable as Iran's. Would you call these two country responsible?
The unfortunate use of 2 nuclear bombs in Japan was regrettable, yet one that was done because there was no other choice. Ironically, Japan was already facing mass famine and starvation at that time, and the use of the 2 nuclear bombs probably saved the remain 6 million people from hunger and death.

Iran and North Korea both signed on to agreements that they have both broken repeatedly. Iran has stated its desire to wipe Israel off the map. The governments of these countries are extremist and cannot be trusted with the responsibility of having nuclear weapons. The likelihood of Iran having a nuclear weapon and handing it over to a group like Hamas or Hezbollah or Al Qaida is far too risky to allow.
The US used nuclear weapons to end world war II. Maybe they should not have used 2 but in the long run it saved many lives because it forced Japan to surrender. Otherwise the war would have continued indefinitely.

Americans been doing this since day one. During the Declaration of Independance, how Midwest and EastCoast combine states have formed Laws to be pass. During that time There was only like 7 states no more than 10. How the American lands is called America now is because the people from one of those states fought many war and killed millions of people to combine more states. Soon the American fought for California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas which belongs to Mexico, and some natives Indians.
So Americans are just being noisy about people bussiness, and what they do. Let me ask you this, Why Americans have nuclear, and why not other country? which make it not fair at all. I believe that American have it for their own protection, and so as the other country.

Think of what the Iranian President has called for - the complete destruction of Isreal and how much easier it will be to do if they have nukes. North Korea scares the hell out of all the countries surrounding it since they are on bad terms with most of them. The US and many other countries would rather they didn't enrich uranium since there is only one use for it, to build nuclear warheads. In warring nations, such as Iran and Korea both are, they would not hesitate to use what ever weapon was at their disposal. History tells us so.

A poorly worded question, but:
Its the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), an agency of the United Nations who controls nuc power and weapons production... the Non-proliferation Treaty covers the weapons / weapons technology.
Yes we made the only battlefield use of nuclear weapons... as Truman faced the fact that a conventional invasion of the home-islands of Japan would cost the US a half a million lives...
Truman's use of the two bombs saved millions of lives, and forgive me but his duty was to the USA.
I have been to Nagasaki as a US Navy serviceman... I know the effects of a Special Weapon...
Fortunately, the Soviet Union and the USA were smart enough to understand that the employment of an atomic warhead was insane...
The USA understands though that there ARE now nations that WANT the technology... to use or to threaten... who WOULD use the weapon in the name of "god"

Atif.... let me make it very simple. Regardless of what type or how big a dog you have in your backyard...do you really want your next door neighbor who you don't really trust to have a big dog in their yard? NO. Why? Because you'll never really know if he'll send is dog to attack you or your family if you happen to pi**him off. Same thing with Nuclear weapons.... Trust Iran...N.Korea, Libya? Right.
By the way Russia happens to have the highest number of nuclear weapons (you count the number of warheads...not bombs or missiles) and not the USA.
And Lova_boy5....every single thing you said about US history was totally incorrect. Learn it correctly or shut up. You're making your self look stupid. Sorry...but I can't put any less direct.

Because America is the Boss!!! Ha! Now do not get me wrong, I have mixed feelings on this, but, We give a lot of money to many countries to help develop them, we help third world countries with Children's health and education etc. & etc. I really doubt any other country would use their power to do what America has done with ours. AND!!!!!!! America did not start this crap!!! It started when WE tried to stay Neutral in a World War and Japan Stabbed us in the back!!!! I know this was not intentional as they had a well planned Attack Stratagy, but, it failed!!! So, America came together, because the "Minuteman" still exisits in America. We played the game and decided after many other options on ending this Crap started that WE tried to avoid. America decide to drop the Sh*t on Japan and it was OVER!!!!!! You understand? It was OVER!!!!!! So, since the rest of the world want to play their Sh*t America WILL stay in control!!!!! But, WE do this for world peace not world hate. Because America and the rest of the world has seen what this power do in the hands of Idiots!!!! America DID NOT want to use Nuclear Power against Japan and as a result has spent Billions to help this Country. BUT, We were not the ones who started it!!!!!!!! AND ALWAYS remember this!!! The minuteman will always exisit in America!!!!!! Don't tread on us and we not tread on you!!!! 911 just got us Treading again!!!

Because dictatorships need enemies to survive. Dictatorships are the regimes that start wars and attack other countries. Dictatorships -- Iran, Libya, North Korea -- with nukes are dangerous... Iran wants to nuke Israel, and North Korea wants to nuke South Korea and Japan. And world peace depends upon evil autocrats being defeated, not "balance of power betwen the countries," whatever the hell that means.

I dont like nukes. Sadly there are enough to destroy the Earth about 10 times over. Its not all of America, mainly the leaders of Every country that wants nukes-not all, but most do. It is for them to try to hold all the power and try to be feared by everyone else....i dont understand it either. i prefer to love and respect the Earth instead of destroying it. Blessed Be.
