Everyone that I know that has been has loved every minute. Be very careful of thieves, especially near and on routes to the Vatican.

I've had the pleasure to visit three cities in Italy....Florence, Assisi, and Rome. All three had something different to offer and are absolutely beautiful but I would have to say I liked Rome the best. It is just so different than over here.....the art and beauty of it all. You will think you've jumped right into a book. The reason I liked Rome the most probably would be because there was sooo much to see and do sense over the years Rome has been the main focal point for many things (like the gladiators...). You will love it if you go, you get big city with a small town feel. The people are also the friendliest I've met and will bend over backwards to help you....though, I must say that if Italians have one flaw it would be their driving (sorry Italians!)...our tour guide told us to not cross the street unless we absolutely have to and he was correct, I almost got hit twice (once in Rome then again in Florence). Allot of people say to look out for pickpockets, which is true where ever you go, but when I was there I saw no one get anything took or anything of that nature...I did see beggars though and they will not leave you alone. Don't worry, you will have a great time its like nothing you have ever experienced before...infact I liked it so much I'm going back for a whole wonderful year and I can't wait!

Rome is one of my favorite cities in the world.
BUT I would not go in the summer months as it is outrageously hot (Europeans are a little slow catching up on the Central Air concept), lots of bugs and to many tourists. May would be alright, otherwise hold off until September. Weather is still nice w/o being stifling and hotels are cheaper as it is a low tourist month.
The city is amazing, and just the fact that the majority of buildings are older than the USA is mind boggling.
Rick Steves has a great guidebook on Rome - or check his website.

Enjoy!

Rome was incredibly hot. I would not suggest going to Italy in July. It was also dirty, with trash laying on the streets. All the major tourist stops had pickpockets and people who were in your face to buy their wares. Rome is definitely a place that you must see, but to spend all your time there would be a mistake. Venice is the say way (dirty and a tourist trap, but a must see). The saying in Italy is See Capri and Die. I would suggest Capri and also Florence.

I would suggest you go in the Spring or early Fall. The summer will be very hot. Rome is nice and with lots of beautiful things to see, but there will be lots of tourists and walking around. I would suggest splitting your time between Rome and other cities. The trains are very easy and reasoably priced for you to travel on.

rome is wonderful if you dont mind walking and you love history! you also need to be open to other people and cultures to get along there. check the weather before you plan for the summer, if it is too warm for you it will be miserable. but the city has so much to offer that i think anyone who appreciates culture and history will have no problem falling in love with rome.

my personal fav was florence. the shopping, beauty, and people were just wonderful! if you can fit florence into your trip, it is a must!

Rome is an amazing city. I personally loved it but then I am very much into history and loved looking round the colleseum and trevi fountain etc. Im also into Italian cuisine so that helped. You can visit the vatican city too which is the smallest independent state in the world apparently. I would really recommened it. It can be quite busy and loud but then you expect that from Capital cities.

Rome is a city that you'll never get tired of, there is too much to do and see, very beautiful historical city. Try to leave large amounts of money or anything valuable in the hotel, there are thieves ...sad but true!!!

Rome is amazing but be careful of the gypsies that try to get money from you. You should go visit the churches if you are going, it is a beautiful city.
