Does anyone else have a dog that does this?

Exercise, Discipline, Affection...in that order. It is a working breed and needs to drain the energy. give a verbal correction whenever they bark (shhhh). Then when they are calm, give affection. Whenever you give affection (petting, cooing, responding to the barking) when they are acting up, you encourage the unwanted behavior.

It is impossible to know without seeing the dog and the situation.

If I had to guess I would say he wants your constant and undivided attention and he has trained you to respond to his barking.

Weimeraners and very active dogs. Since you have one, you need to invest a lot of time into exercising him. A tired dog is a good dog.

Also you need to untrain yourself and teach him that he cannot DEMAND your attention.

Two ways to do that:
1. Teach him to bark on command, and the associated command to stop barking. Then when he begins to bark you can use the stop command on him. There are many ways to do this, but choose one that involves positive reinforcement.

2. Use the Nothing in Life is Free technique. Here is a website to explain that. http://www.k9deb.com/nilif.htm

In short, you teach the dog that he must ask politely for attention and cannot demand it. If he does demand, you walk away. However that does not mean you ignore your dog. Instead you call him to you and (for instance) make him sit a thousand times a day so that you can give him attention. But if he demands, you ignore.

Good luck.

My peke does this if he wants something...if he has fresh water, hes gone outside and done his business and had his limit of treats or food for the day I will usually walk him around the block a few times to run down the bored excess energy and he will come back and relax with me on the sofa.
Otherwise, he could be on the sofa when you are away and think you are in his space when you are home, does he have a dog bed near the sofa as an alternative?

i have a weimaraner. they need vigorous exercise daily. yes it wants attention, but if it gets its running it will be a much more well behaved dog, and easier to train. this is extremely important for weimaraners.
