The Toyota Camry sedans sold in North America: where are they assembled and what proportion of their parts are made in North America (i.e, Canada and the US combined.)

And what's the reputation of the Camry?

It depends which model year of Camry you are talking about. The 2007 models are built in Indiana or Kentucky, with the exception of the top-of-the-line XLE V6 models with Navigation and Smart Key. Those particular Camrys are still built in Japan.

Sometimes US factories have not been fully converted to make new models. Thus reducing the capacity of US made cars and increasing the number of imports. For example I have a 2003 4Runner. 2003 was the first year of the redesign for the 4Runner and mine happened to be built in Japan. 2004-2007 4Runners are made in North America.

Here's how you can tell whether a car is made here or if it was made overseas:

If it was made overseas there should be hooks on the back and sometimes front of the car. These hooks are underneath the car. If a car is shipped overseas it needs the hooks to be tied down. If you are buying a 2007 Camry, the majority do no have hooks, but as I mentioned some will. Also on the 2007 Camry, the imported ones will have a small plastic panel on the front bumper that is meant to pop out during shipping.

They are about to start making them in Lafayette Indiana, about 40 minutes away from where I live. I'm not sure where they are made right now or the proportions, but I know that 2/3 of all Toyotas are assembled in the United States.

As far as reputation goes, the Camry is about the best car you'll ever find. We have a 2000 with over 119,000 miles and still kicking. We've put about 90,000 miles on it since we bought it in 2002 and have never had anything done to it other than regular stuff like tires and oil. If you're looking to buy one, I would definetly say go for it!

The first part of your question has been pretty well covered. Re the "reputation" of a car, you can translate that directly to resale value. Good cars maintain their resale and you will find that Toyota and Lexus (luxury Toyota) are by far the leaders in resale value over time.

The folks at Toyota have figured out how to mass produce a high quality automobile and sell it at a reasonable price and still make a good profit. In my estimation they do it better than any other car maker in the world. Check JD Powers owners ratings. Number 1 for past 10 or 12 years. I used to drive Toyota Supras until they stopped producing them. Great cars.
