it's new - can I just take it back to the store and trade it or do I have to get it repaired. Does anyone know why it won't play? DVD menu won't come up either.

If you have the receipt, I would take it back where you got and exchange it

Sometimes they have multiple outputs, one set for the VCR side, another for the DVD. If this doesn't work, take it back:

Hook the unit up via the s-video cable if you can, if not, change to another RCA out. Next, once you have your TV preset to channel 3 or 4 (whichever you choose), pop in a DVD. Once it closes, select the TV/DVD or TV/VCR button.

If that doesn't work, try the DVD button (the one you use to power on the unit). That should do it.

I had the same issue with mine the first time I used it. Took me 2 days to figure out the thing defaults to VCR, and you have to physically push the DVD button to get it to change over.

You may have to hook up the player using the three part cable in order to play DVDs.

Check the manual.
