Yes. It happened once durting the Reagan administration when mental hospitals were closed and the mentally ill ended up on the streets, homeless and sick. And it's happening again. In recent years quite a few social services have been cut to the bone. Meanwhile, we give the super-rich tax cuts and build post offices in Iraq. Tell me what's wrong with this picture.

Well, the problem with that is that the state can't force anyone to receive treatment unless they are a danger to themselves or others. Some homeless people are so far gone that they don't go to get help. Others realize the conditions in some of the mental hospitals and/or shelters are so bad that they rather be on the street and free to live their lives. We should be able to offer better resources to those that need it. Half-way houses are good, group homes are beneficial too because they have round the clock care, but the patients have more freedom and Independence. No one wants to feel controlled by another human being, even if it is in their best interest. More funding should go into programs that teach the mentally ill self-sufficiency.

It seems to me that the USA has stopped supporting a lot of people. They have no trouble helping the foreign countries, but the taxpayers suffer big time.
