I lost 15 lbs very quickly on Atkins but got pregnant so I had to stop the ketogenic diet. Still I low carbed my way through pregnancy, had a healthy 9 lb boy right on my due date (gained 30 lbs) and was 5 lbs below my start weight at 6 wks postpartum.
It was very difficult in the beginning but after the first week I never felt better in my life. Boundless energy, digestive problems vanished, sharp and clear headed. It's not for everyone though, and it's very restrictive. I did the induction as written but modified the rest of the diet as I went along making it more similar to South Beach. I didn't like all the fat and preferred leaner meats like fish/chicken.
South Beach is sort of a less restrictive low fat version of Atkins. The key is to cut out the carbs, especially sugar and white flour and minimize the fruit. If you can do that, most people will lost weight steadily.
If you drink sugared soda, cut that out first, that is the absolute worst thing to drink. It's best to drink just water because fluids are empty calories. I like iced tea, also Crystal Light has some good drinks made with Splenda but since Splenda is new I don't like to have too much with that in it. Then cut out sugared desserts, then start cutting down things like potatoes, pasta, bread, rice, corn and all white dough and add more vegetables and protein. That's really all you have to do and that's the basis of all low carb diets.

I did SouthBeach and lost nearly 50 pounds over a year. It's much more heart healthy than Atkins' diet is for you.

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.
On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.
The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!
Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.
Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.
Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

I don't know a lot about the 'fad' diets, so go to your local library or bookstore and check them out,,,,, in the long run, it's whatever you are going to stick with that is best for you. Either way, you have to use up more calories than you take in, as well as adding excerise to lose and keep the weight off/ GOOD LUCK You can do it!

I lost about 20 pounds on the Atkins diet but as soon as I stopped it all plus more came back. It is something that once you start have to stick with it for life. I do not recommend it. It is a heart attack waiting to happen.
More people that I know have lost more weight with weight watchers. It teaches you how to eat healthy.

I think the South Beach diet is much more realistic and safer. Be very leery of Atkins-I've seen people eat way too much meat, not enough of other foods that their body needs, and end up with nutritional deficiencies or even heart problems/high cholesterol.
