do they really like themselves so much that they dont want to be someone else. I find to have this trait a really difficult one esp. if i want to please someone and be nice to someone. Usually i find people who are "themselves" as arrogant and pompous. Maybe thats just me and my "friends" but what have u to say.

It's more about why someone is doing something rather than what they are doing for your question. We should all continue to learn and grow as individual people in a healthy way that is respectful and not damaging to ourselves and others. Giving this up to please some one is called co-dependency and is a perfect recipe for an intense relationship that will end disastrously. Often if you talk to people who have recently gotten divorced you will be able to tell when they started thier marriage/relationship by how they act, talk, dress, the music they listen to. It's like they got stuck in time because they did not continue to learn, live, grow, and experience new things. Stifling your own development is a sure killer for any relationship or friendship. This does not mean you have to go out and screw around on your partner. You have to find a healthy balance that is respectful and not damaging to everyone. This is not easy to do, it's more a life-long learning process. We will all make mistakes along the way but just do your best then you won't have to beat yourself up about what you could have done better.

I think with age people become more comfortable in their own skin and unless they are particularly shallow or insecure they feel no need to put on a front. Some people are just arrogant and pompous; plenty pleasant, genuine people are 'themselves' too!

People are motivated to be themselves when they feel like they adapt so often that they're living a lie. That they're being dishonest with society by not being true. It makes it hard to sleep at night. If pleasing others is what makes you happy, by all means, please them. But if you ever feel like you're living a lie, you know your happiness is more important than humoring a few people, who probably don't think you mean that much to their lives to begin with.

There is a big difference in being one's self and being arrogant. I am myself at all times, but 'myself' is relatively kind, caring, and concerned about others. I have the internal security of who I am and what I can do, and that makes it easy to be 'myself.' What you are describing is NOT oneself, but an image of what they want to be....and not a very good one, at that. Good luck and peace.

Usually those who are the fullest and grandest expression of who and what they are, do it without ego and it is natural for them, it doesn't matter what is going on in their external reality.

My motivation was realizing that nobody was really going to like me anyway, no matter how I acted, so I just said, screw it, if they don't like who I am, F*** them.
