A map is a spatial representation of the environment. It depicts space in the sense that it is firmly tied to the ground, and is meaningless without its spatial context. It is a representation in the sense that it should not be misunderstood or substituted for reality, insofar as it aids us to conceive reality and impose an artificial order on the real world. And lastly a map illustrates, or at least indicates, the environment, both natural and man-made, that we would find in the given space.

According to Muehrcke, P. and Muehrcke, J. (1992), there are two types of maps based on design logic:

1. Reference or general purpose maps: portray environmental details accurately which could be interpreted by keen observation and knowledge about the physical features; and
2. Thematic or special-purpose maps: depict the general spatial pattern and could be either attribute-related or statistical/quantitative. These maps are more symbolic in their representation of attributes and need a sophisticated approach to interpret.

Amongst both these map types, there is a greater abstraction involved in the latter than in the former, as it involves characteristics of the environment (say median household income) not directly visible in the physical environment. Also there is a greater degree of cartographic bias in the latter especially since it involves a greater subjectivity in categorization and symbolization.

The legend of a map tells you what the symbols used on the map represent.

A general purpose map is one that gives you a good sense of what a country looks like, where its borders are and its topographic & geographic features (i.e. a map of the US that shows the Great Lakes, Grand Canyon, etc. but doesn't show things like highways.

A Special-purpose map is one designed for a specific intent. A road map is a special-purpose map, because it's use is specifically for navigating travel. A shoreline map helps navigate water passages, etc.

A legend is a key to decoding each map's unique symbols, and its scale, it makes the map readable. Every map has one.
