There are 44 million Americans with no basic health insurance, half of that number are women and children, this is wrong. We spend $500 billion a year on defense. The 33 million that have Medicare they pay for it $90 per month, that pays 80 percent of the bill, tax payers fund that program. Congress should allow the 44 million with no basic insurance to join the 33 million in Medicare and pay $180 per month to get 80 percent of the bills paid. This would front load the system without tax payer money. Medicare insurance does a great job in America, they cap cost's. Republicans hate it. The hate anything that helps the average American in his life. Democrats support Medicare and they will protect S.S.. Republicans have a long record of wanting to end Social Security. BTW, it is a bold face lie that people from other countries come here for health care, there are no facts to back that lie up with. I waited 45 mins. today for my appointment and that's normal. Most Doctors oppose caps on there earnings so they propagate many lies. It is also fact that most Doctors take on far too many because of greed.BTW, the high cost of malpractice insurance is another lie the Neocons use, there are no facts to back that up as well. Some Doctors do pay high but these are generally only small numbers the ones that have lots of suits against them.

I am a Canadian and would say that our system, flaws and all, would be a good starting point.

I'd make some adjustments though...for starters:

1. I (even as a liberal Canadian!) like the idea of a two tiered-esque system. If some one is so persistent on getting their tests done faster, let them pay an arm and a leg in a private practice, but make that private practice make themselves available do a percentage of health care tests or surgeries as well. This will shut up the people with money who think they are entitled to things better and faster and take the strain off the public system for those who actually need it.

2. Set up a system where non-emergent matters being attended to in an emergency are subject to a fee. I'm not talking about the equivalent to what you would pay somewhere where there is no universal health care but just enough to be somewhat of a deterrent. I think one of the biggest drains on our universal system are people who do not think twice about going to the emergency room to try and get antibiotics for the common cold or to have a boil lanced that could wait until the next day when they could see their General Practitioner. Just a fee enough to make people think twice, but not be afraid to seek medical attention in a possibly serious situation. My province has set up a health link line where you can contact a nurse 24-7 to see if you should really seek emergent care...I think this is great, and have used it once or twice.

I would hate to be in America and suffer a heart attack and then be subject to recovery, missed time at work, weakened system and, on top of it all be like how many thousands of dollars in debt???

The problems on your end pal. Find a better doctor. I usually only have to wait at most a week to see my doctor. Sure there's room for improvement but I don't think socialized healthcare is the way to go. If you think taxes are high now wait `til Uncle Sam starts Hoo' Ridin' allover your wallet to pay for that **** too. If you've ever been to a free clinic you'll wait even longer. You wanna start paying doctors McDonald's wages don't be suprised when you get McDonalds quality medical care. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

One thing I would say definately needs fixed is we need better trained nurses and more of them. It's not uncommon for nurses to be working two days straight even though they're not supposed to. The nurses are tired and thus they will make mistakes. Mistakes and judgment lapses like that are deadly in an operating room. This is because there are nowhere near enough trained nurses.

Insurance is a scam.
Between them and the lawyers, the cost of health care is ridiculous.
Unfortunately, to "regulate" would draw this country closer and closer to socialism than it already is. We will always hear about how a poor soul didn't get this or that even though the technology is available. Well, it costs to come up with new technology. Even if "basic" health care were offered to all US citizens (not including the illegals) the cost would be huge, the service minimal, the scammers would come out of the woodwork like roaches, and the cost of supplemental coverage would skyrocket.

There are many health care desparities in health care in the US. Different regions/cities/states have better health care than elsewhere. Studies have shown that people of color receive poorer health care than caucasians. Women receive poorer health care than men. Medications are way too expensive as drug companies wine & dine healthcare personnel. These are some of the things that need to be looked at with health care reform.

The first thing that has to be done is tort reform. No one, not even the government, can afford universal heath care, until malpractice suits and the accompanying insurance is brought under control. Unfortunately, the only way to do that is to get the lawyers out of Congress.

Have no clue where you get your facts. The US Healthcare system is the envy of the world. Canadians come across the border to get here for it, Brits come for serious operations. I call the doctor and get an appointment in a few days unless it is an emergency than he sees me as soon as I can get there.

Limit it to people who can afford to pay for it or have a medical plan provided by an employer.

The government should stay out of providing health care for anyone who is not a government employee.

United States is the only industrialized country that does not have universal health care.

The QUALITY of health care is very good , I believe. It is the AVAILABILITYand AFFORDABILITY that needs serious improvement. THE HEALTH INSURANCE INDUSTRY should be charged with criminal negligence every time it refuses to pay for treatment.
