Each person is different. Pay attention to how you feel and discuss this with your doctor. There are many meds available today that can be prescribed to treat panic attacks. You can also address your questions to your pharmacist.

In my experience, it made me more anxious, so we switched to a different med. It is all about chemistry.

Xanax works great for panic attacks and anxiety but it has the risk of dependency. 2mg is very high, you might want to consider a lower dosage.
When therapy with this medication is stopped, some patients may experience withdrawal symptoms. As with some other types of medications, your body can develop a physical dependence on Xanax. That is, your body becomes accustomed to the presence of the drug. Abruptly stopping or cutting down on the prescribed dosage can be unpleasant and even dangerous. However, following the prescribing physician’s instructions correctly and reducing the dosage gradually can diminish those symptoms.

Side effects, if they occur, are generally observed at the beginning of therapy and usually disappear upon continued use. The most commonly reported side effects in clinical trials were drowsiness, fatigue, impaired coordination, irritability, light-headedness, memory impairment, insomnia, and headache.

To assure safe and effective use of Xanax make sure that you:

Inform your physician about any alcohol consumption and medicine you are currently taking, including medication you may buy without a prescription.
XANAX is not recommended for use in pregnancy. Inform your physician if you are pregnant, if you are planning to become pregnant, or if you become pregnant while taking this medication.
Inform your physician if you are nursing.
Until you experience how the medication affects you, do not drive a car or operate hazardous machinery.
Do not increase the dose even if you think the medication isn't working, without consulting your physician.
Xanax, even when used as recommended , may produce emotional and/physical dependence.
Do not stop taking this medication abruptly or decrease the dose without consulting your physician, since discontinuation symptoms may occur.

I had good luck with xanax taking it for panic attacks over about a 5 yr period, maybe once in six weeks. Then the panic attacks went away and I've not missed the xanax.

Xanax is an addictive drug that loses effectiveness overtime. You might find yourself needing more and more with each passing month. I suggest you talk to your doctor about an anti-depressant. Effexor is one of the best drugs out there that treats depression as well as various anxiety disorder. Including panic disorder. Paxil is another one. These drugs are good for long term treatment of disorders where as Xanax, Valium, and Klonepin are good for temporary.

XANAX IS LIKE THE BEST FOR PANIC ATTACKS. TAKE IT FROM MY EXPERIENCE. FROM ZOLOF TO SEREQUEL TO PAXIL TO ABOUT EVERY PILL YOU CAN NAME OVER A 17 YEAR PERIOD XANAX HAS REALLY WORKED WONDERS FOR ME. BUT WATCH HOW YOU TAKE THEM, DON'T SKIP AROUND WITH THEM MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THEM EVERYDAY TO WORK EFFECTIVLEY. AND IF THEY DO WORK REALLY WELL FOR YOU AND YOU DON'T WANT THE DOCTOR TO TAKE YOU OFF OF THEM MAKE SURE ON YOUR DOCTOR VISITS YOU TELL HIM HOW GOOD THEY WORK FOR YOU CAUSE DOCTORS DO SOMETIMES JUST SAY WE ARE GONNA TRY SOMETHING ELSE WHEN YOU ARE ON NARCOTICS. ONCE YOU ARE ON THEM FOR A WHILE AND SAY YOU SKIP A DAY OR 2 YOU WILL GET A HEADACHE AND IRRITABLE KINDA LIKE YOU ARE ADDICTED. AFTER A WHILE JUST LIKE ANY OTHER ANXIETY MEDICATION IT WILL STAY IN YOUR SYSTEM AND YOU WILL BE DEPENDANT ON IT EVEN THOUGH THE DOCTORS SAY IT IS SHORT TERM. BUT AFTER JUST A LITTLE WHILE YOU WILL NOTICE A BIG CHANGE, LIKE ME I AM MORE OPEN TO PEOPLE, I'M NOT SO PANICKY, AND THEY WORK SO FAST, IF I FEEL PANIC COMING ON FROM SOMETHING I TAKE ONE AND IT MAKES IT BETTER SO FAST. HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL.
