i want to buy curtains that go half way down the wall (my window is 86" by 43") so I want to know how wide the curtains should be. Don't you have to multiply by 2 or 3 because they have to be very scrunched together on the window when they're closed?

You are right, multiply x 2. That way they will be fuller and look very nice.

You have to do a little math. First multiply the width of your window by double ex: 2 x's 86" = 172" . Then choose the curtains you want and find out their width and buy enough to equal the width of your window. Read the packaging carefully as the picture will sometimes make you believe there is enough to cover your windows when actually there is only one panel per package and the instructions will say something to the effect of " to cover this size window purchase a certain number of panels".

Depends partly on your fabric. If it's thin, drapy, or sheer, use double the width for each panel, so each panel will be 41" wide. If the fabric is stiff or heavy, use 1-1/2 times width so each panel will be 30". You don't have to be exact with this. If your fabric is 44" or 36", I'd just hem the selvage without cutting off an inch or two.

How Many Panels For Window

You usually figure 1 1/2 to 2 times the width of the window, so I would go with four panels, panels usually run about 45 inches wide per panel.

The width of the panel can vary on how many panels you want to use. My window is 50" wide and I use 3 panels.
