I am so sorry. I have battled with them for twenty years. I found that I was allergic to MSG ( in Doritos, Campbell's soup, Cheetos, salad dressings, etc) but mostly migraines for me have been hormonal...so that is tough. I found that Imitrex saved my life and it never made me drowsy. Some people cannot take Imitrex, but there are plenty of other mild alternatives that still let you teach, drive, etc. Please see a doctor and get relief, but stay away from the narcotic sedatives... they are overwhelming and the pain still stays. In the meantime, stay as quiet as you can and take a warm bath in a dark bathroom.... don't fall asleep and drown though!

First find out what your "triggers" are. Take note of when you eat or drink chocolate, artificial sweetener, caffiene and anything else you don't have every day. Mark your calendar when you have a migraine so you can see over time if it is related to menstruation, bills coming due, payday, the full moon, or a day of unusual stress. For me the triggers are a day of unusual stress which means the next day I have the migraine and artificial sweetener (in diet and flavor enhanced products - acesulfame, nutrisweet, sweet & lo, etc.) which cause me to have a migraine within 10 minutes! So far the best thing that works for me is plain aspirin. Many people cannot take aspirin but these days there are several medications available by prescription that actually do work. You need to go to a doctor that knows about migraines (not necessarily a specialist but someone who is familiar with treating them) because many doctors do not realize how serious they really are. They dont understand the way they can almost cripple you for a whole day at a time with pain. When I get one I cannot drive, cook, or do anything potentially dangerous due to huge gaps in my vision even when I can force myself to function past the pain. Luckily I get a few warning signs (tingling and tiny vision gaps) before it really hits and a couple of aspirin helps it pass within an hour or two, sometimes allowing me to stay at work instead of rushing home to bed.

Here's what a friend's doctor recommended for her - it works for me also! Take 2 Tylenol and 2 Advil at the same time, washed down with a small amount of caffeine (pop or coffee). Then go lie down for about an hour until they start to work. You can't do it too often, and you can't do it if you have any medical conditions that it might mess with, but for just those emergency situations it really does work.

Advil is the best pain medicine I've managed to find, but for that time until it starts kicking in, try taking big, deep breaths. Oxygen is a great natural pain reliever, and if you're breathing too shallowly, it can also bring on or worsen a headache. Hope that helps!

See a doctor. Excedrin Migraine is a good OTC. I take a script called Fiorinal (butalbital compound) which works well for me.

I like Sarah's idea, although I've never tried it. I press my fingers into my temples. That temporarily relieves the pain. The only drawback is that when you release the pressure, the pain usually comes back. I will caution you, if you do this, release the pressure slowly. If you do it too quickly the pain will knock you to the floor.
