I'm asking because of an incident that happened with my grandparents. They are old-fashioned baptists and my grandma always refuses to do laundry and stuff on sundays. I thought the bible said to "remember the lords day and keep it holy" what is so unholy about doing necessary things on the lords day? my grandparents have to move due to health and financial issues and my grandma is the biggest pack rat ever. so my mom has been working day and night to get the house ready. she set up a huge garage sale and put up 80 signs for it. on saturday, my grandma comes out and says the garage sale cannot happen on a sunday. why didnt she say so earlier? i dont know. but she got very uptight and rude about it, which i thought was pretty nasty considering everything my mother was doing for them. is it really so dishonoring to the lord to have a garage sale on a sunday, when it is something that really needs to be done? and isnt being rude and ungrateful just as "bad"? what do you think

and what do you consider to be "honoring the lord's day"? do you even practice that? and did my grandma take it to far, or was she justified in freaking out on my mom when she was trying so hard to help?

Although your grandmother’s zeal is to be admired, she is in a slight error. There is no command anywhere in the Bible to keep Sunday holy. If one looks through the Bible, they would see that the Sabbath (sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday) is the only day we are commanded to keep holy.

As for the Lord’s Day, the Bible is quite clear as to what day that is:

"Eat the food you gathered yesterday. Today is a Sabbath, the Lord's day of rest;" (Exodus 16:23 NCV)

"This is what the Lord commanded, because tomorrow is the Sabbath, the Lord's holy day of rest." (Exodus 16:25 NCV)

"but the seventh day is a day of rest to honor the Lord your God." (Exodus 20:10 NCV)

"So the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath day" (Matthew 12:8 NCV)

"So then, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath day." (Mark 2:28 NCV)

"Then Jesus said to the Pharisees, 'The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath day.'" (Luke 6:6 NCV)

Finally, yes, we are to keep it very holy. The Bible tells us to stop doing the things for us but only do things for God on the Sabbath.

"You must obey God's law about the Sabbath and not do what pleases yourselves on that holy day. and honor it as the Lord's holy day. You should honor it by not doing whatever you please nor saying whatever you please on that day.” (Isaiah 58:13 NCV)

I come out of the same generation as your Grandma so I can probably relate to her. The basis for the Lord's day is in Isaiah 58:13 "If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your own pleasure on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the LORD honorable, And honor it, desisting from your own ways, From seeking your own pleasure And speaking your own word, 14 Then you will take delight in the LORD, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
I know how great a battle that takes place inside you when you come up against these conflicts and you have followed something like that all your life. It is like tearing your arm off. Whether it is right or wrong I think you should honor her request. Why could you not have it on Saturday. Why did you not expect it when you mention she has been this way all her life.

Jesus had the same problem. when he healed a man on the sabbath, the pharisees wanted to kill him. They forgot the whole purpose of the sabbath day was to rest from labor and reflect on the creator. When Jesus died, he did away with the Mosaic law covenant, which means christians r no longer under those restrictions. the early christians set no certain days or festivals except for the lord's evening meal which celebrated their new covenant with Christ. for a biblical reference, check Galations 3; 13 which describes his releasing us from the curse of the Law, but we now must live by faith. Don't be angry at your grands, cause that's the way they were taught, and hopefully u can reason with them on this issue.

Why can't you just respect her beliefs? She has certainly earned the respect considering your mother is still alive and was raised healthy enough to have you. Why do assume she is wrong? Because of what your mother may have said? Well, she obviously didn't listen to her mother. Look up Blue Laws on wikipedia. Not very long ago very little business was done on Sunday. It was considered to be a day to be with your family. I don't think it was a bad idea, since the liberalization seems to have dissolved the family unit. Your grandmother knows more than you think.

In my church Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy means to refrain from doing the usual daily routine. We do not shop or go anywhere that would cause someone else to have to work. Even though they are probably working anyway. Sunday is a day devoted to God and His Kingdom here on earth. We attend church, visit family or friends and read scriptures. We also write family histories and letters to service men and women. There is a "Gotta Get your ox out of the Mire" conditional exemption to this routine.

If you believe the Lord's day is a day called Sunday, you are in bad shape.

Scripturely, the Lord's day is when Christ return's and rules for 1000 years here on Earth.

Jesus was confronted by the Pharisees for healing the sick on the Sabbath. Now, I'm not saying that your grandmother is the same as a Pharisee (I hope that she isn't that legalistic about her salvation, which God brought about by grace through faith in Jesus, God the Son), but that is a pretty rigid interpretation of the law. My grandmother was similarly bound, but God freed her before she passed away, and she was a joy to be around after this...

Many prayers for their health and happiness, and for yours as well...

i wouldn't have a garage sale on Sunday, nor do I wash, mow or anything like that. That should be done on Saturday or wait until Monday. That's the way I was raised and it's worked for me.

God said keep the sabbath holy and make it a day of rest. He did not say "only if you felt like it" . It is one of His commandments. And important part of being A Christian is being obedient to God and His rules. It is for our benefit that we do, but people don't see it that way. They are more involved with what they want instead of what God wants for us.

Do you remeber the part of the Lord's prayer that says "Thy will be done"? It does not say My will be done does it? It is talking about us wanting to do the will of God, which is keeping the sabbath day holy. Your grandmother is right. Laundry is considered house hold work. We are not to work on the sabbath.

Exodus 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

You see?
