Hey girlie, do you want the short Muslim version or the long extended truth version? Short version : Muslims who are pius in their beliefs fast during the day and eat before the sun rises and sets. Its a strength of faith.
Long drawn out version.
Islams founder, Muhammad, began his career attacking rich caravans passing near his base in Medina. The first three assaults failed. The fourth succeeded because the victims were surprised by an ambush during Ramadan. Arab tribes had long refrained from aggression in that "holy month." Muhammad, however, had received a "revelation" authorizing plunder and murder in Allahs name during this special time of peace (Surah 2:217). Another absolved the Muslims of killing: "Ye slew them not, but Allah slew them" (Surah 8:17).
Most Muslims dont realize that in observing Ramadan and the annual pilgrimage (hajj) to Mecca, they follow what pagan Arabs practiced for centuries before Muhammad was born (see TBC Feb 00.

wow alot of people tell you strange things.
well im gonna be very pratical
Ramadan is one month in the arabic calander which muslims fast in as you already now.
Why? well its kind of like because it gives you inner strength and esteem. But Most importantly its like a reminder to humanity that look, there are still poor people out on the streets that have no food at all. yet you feast everyday.. imagine how they feel. fasting is a way to make you realize that you still need to care about the needy and poor. Basicaly.
during ramadan its gonna be kind of like a holy month. you have to remember God. do Good things like help the needy, give back to the community. Anything thats a good thing in life, do it.
You can't do things that will distract you from god. like sex, ur gonna end up doing that when its prayer time and miss prayer.
so yeah.. i hope that was simple enough for you. becareful what you read some people give you hateful information which is not true.
alright you can email questions if you want i don't mind.
okay take care bye bye.

Ramadan is the ninth Lunar Month in the Islamic calendar..It was the month when the first verse of the Qur'an revealed...God has assigned all Muslims "adults" to fast in Ramadan unless they have an excuse...plus fasting God gives Muslims more reward for doing good things like praying and giving money to the poor, so we pray taraweeh which is a special prayer we pray at night..and at the end of Ramadan there is a special charity we pay called Zakat Al Fetr
Ramadan is the month of the Qur'an so Muslims try to read the Qur'an at least one time during this month 'the whole Qur'an"..After Ramadan we have Eid which is our first feast..we have another one after the end of Hajj "Pilgrimage"..Ramadan is the chance for every Muslim to make his relation with God better and to seek his forgiveness.

Celebrate the night accention of the prophet muhammad(pbuh) when he was led through the seven heavens and met THE GOD. Led by jibril(gabriel). It is a time for reflection and repentance. They fast during the day and can eat when the sun goes down. They can have sex with thier husband or wife after sunset, but not during the fasting period. And if they do indulge in intercourse, they must shower before the sunrise. This is the time that one of the 5 pillars can be completed. A pilgrimage to mecca at least once in your lifetime(not required if you do not have expenses for it). PEACE!

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic Lunar calendar. It is the month in which first contact was made with Muhammad (PBUH) on the Night of Power, through the Archangel Gabriel, while Muhammad was meditating in the cave of Hiraa on the Mountain of Light near Mecca.
Fasting is one of the 5 pillars of Islam, and Muslims fast during this holy month from dawn to sunset. If you live in parts of the world where sunsets/sunrises are too close/far apart, you can observe a fasting timetable instead of relying on the sun. Islam is flexible in many respects.
Fasting involves no drink or food, abstinence from sex during the day, self-control, no cursing, no killing of animals, express kindness to people and animals, and observing Islamic practices, including prayer and Qur'an reading.

To humble ourselves, practice self-restraint, and as a time for spiritual improvement. It is said that if we are making dua (supplication) or praying on Lailat al Qadr (night of power, during either the 21,23,25,27 or 29th day no one knows) it is as if we prayed 70,000 nights and God will answer all our prayers! But it is for only one special moment. Of course God is merciful and rewards us liberally anyway, but there is something so special about not knowing which day it is; the motivation to pray superobligatory prayers those last few odd days of the Ramadan month. Well I hope i helped hun. Peace!

Ramadan is the name of the ninth month in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar. The religious observances of Ramadan occur throughout the entire Islamic calendar month. The calendar month Ramadan, 2006 (1427 AH) starts on September 24, 2006 and ends on October 23, 2006.
Fasting
The most prominent event of this month is the fasting practiced by all observant Muslims. The fasting during Ramadan has been so predominant in defining the month that some have been led to believe the name of this month, Ramadan, is the name of Islamic fasting, when in reality the Islamic term for fasting is sawm.
Eating, drinking and sexual intercourse are not allowed between dawn (fajr), and sunset (maghrib). During Ramadan, Muslims are also expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam by refraining from violence, anger, envy, greed, lust, angry and sarcastic retorts, and gossip. People are meant to try to get along with each other better than they normally might. All obscene and irreligious sights and sounds are to be avoided. Purity of both thought and action is important. The fast is an exacting act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a raised level of closeness to God. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the inner soul and free it from harm.
Fasting during Ramadan is not obligatory for several groups for whom it would be excessively problematic. Children before the onset of puberty are not required to fast, though some do. However, if puberty is delayed, fasting becomes obligatory for males and females after a certain age. According to the Qur'an, if fasting would be dangerous to someone's health, such as a person with an illness or medical condition (this can include the elderly), that person is excused. For example, diabetics and nursing or pregnant women usually are not expected to fast; they are encouraged to feed a needy person instead. According to hadith, observing the Ramadan fast is not allowed for menstruating women. Other individuals for whom it is usually considered acceptable not to fast are those in battle and travelers who intend to spend fewer than five days away from home. If one's condition preventing fasting is only temporary, one is required to make up for the days missed after the month of Ramadan is over and before the next Ramadan arrives. If one's condition is permanent or present for an extended period of time, one may make up for the fast by feeding a needy person for every day missed.
If one who does not fit into one of the exempt categories breaks the fast out of forgetfulness, the fast is still valid. If, however, one intentionally breaks the fast, that individual must continue fasting for the remainder of the day but then make up for the entire day later. If one breaks the fast through consensual sexual intercourse, the trangressor must make up for the day by fasting for sixty consecutive days.
Laylat al-Qadr
Main article: Laylat al-Qadr
Laylat al-Qadr is the anniversary of important dates in Islam that occurred in the month of Ramadan..
Tarawih
During this month, extra optional prayers of eight to twenty raka'ah, called tarawih, are prayed each night in the mosque by Sunni Muslims.
Shi'a Muslims do not pray this prayer. They call it an innovation in Islam .
Eid ul-Fitr
The Islamic holiday of Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan and the beginning of the following month.
