I am a qualified counsellor and there are so many disorders now that never used to be around 10 years ago. Doctors seem to like putting labels on something they cannot really explain. Sounds professional, but doesnt really solve the problem. What exactly is Social Anxiety Disorder?......are you afraid of going out socially? Maybe you are shy, maybe you dont interact well with people...maybe you havent got a disorder at all. All these personality disorders that the medical profession are coming up with now is just absolutely crazy. We all have different personalities, we all can cope differently in certain situations and just because one person is outgoing and another person is introverted doesnt mean someone has a "disorder".
There is a disorder that prevents a person leaving their own home, cant remember what that one is because there are so many, but its not a disorder, its a phobia. It is a real fear of the outdoors. Do you have a phobia about going out anywhere?, or do you just feel nervous when you do? If you have a real fear of going out anywhere, if your heart starts beating at 100 miles an hour and if you break out in a sweat, if your mind is telling you there is nothing to be afraid of and you still are so afraid that going out the door would be the worst thing to happen to you, so you dont venture outside then you have a phobia and you need professional help by a person who is qualified in dealing with phobia's. Clostophobia is another one...a person knows that closed spaces will not hurt them, but they cannot think logically about it and really do experience terrible fear.
If you are nervous about going out and meeting new people, then join the millions of people who experience the same thing. It is a confidence problem probably and you need help in building up your confidence. Counselling will help. Joining self help groups will help. Doing courses will help. You have a problem with low self esteem. What you need to do is to do things you are good at. Start to feel good about yourself...learn you are not alone, and none of us have 100 percent confidence in everything, some are good at one thing and another person is not. We are all nervous about something in our lives. You can overcome this by building up your self esteem and for everyone how you do it is different because we are not all good at the same things. Draw on your strengths...learn what you are good at and build on it. Go and do a self esteem course...there are plenty of options available to you.
But if it is a real phobia as I spoke of earlier, then you do need some serious professional intervention.

Social anxiety disorder is like having a panic attack when you are around a lot of people, particularly those you don't know. You feel as everyone is looking at you, you cannot socialize because you think people will scrutinize everything you say and do. Also it keeps you from going out in public. There is medication for this, you might be also able to get social security pension if it comes associated with depression or other types of panic disorders. If you or someone you know has this, you need medical attention to be able to live a normal life. Good luck.
p.s. as far as what causes there is no way to find out.I asked my Doctor, he said you either have or you don't.

I have a mild form of it, my sister's is severe.
Her psychologist told me that I should be fine, it won't get worse, just do what I keep doing, and that he's trying to get my sister up to my point.
Personally, it's based on the individual; I place myself in workshops and classes - where I sweat and don't participate for like half of the class - to try to overcome it. I can't, but I do cope. But some people like my sister are on medication to ease it, but I don't think it ever goes away.
Apparently, it's hereditary, passed down from the parent's bloodline.
With my mother, it actually got worse, instead of better, where mine was the opposite, and I can deal with it where no one knows.
So, everyone's different.
You have to find what's best for you: Deal with it and excercise in coping with it, or see a doctor or psychologist for a prescription.
Good luck.

I think you will find harmony in life when your "ying" and your "yang" are in a total balance. You cannot, for example, thrive with to much "ying."
So, for starters, let us begin with your breatheing. Failure to breathe deeply, all the way down to the deepest part of your lungs will allow poisonous gases and moisture to accumulate within your body for extended periods. Prevent that by learning how to breathe deeply with each inhalation and exhalation. Hold your hand over your lower stomach and sense the difference between a normal breath and one in which you lift your upper chest as you inhale. Breathe at a normal rate, but more deeply than before. If you begin to feel a little light headed, or giddy, that is because you are getting drunk on the new flows of oxygen to unused parts of your lungs. Learn how to regulate this feeling.
A new sense of power will begin to build within you as you work to master this first step in the ultimate balance of the Ying and Yang within. This new power is often called self confidence and is only fully attained when in complete control of your body forces.
Join a training class in Karate, or Judo at your first opportunity to complete the next eleven steps of ultimate internal balance and harmony.

I have dealt with it for years. Don't know where it comes from. I saw a shrink for awhile that gave me meds. Looking back I can say I am better off with out the drugs or shrink. I just learned to deal. When I eat out I sit with my back to the wall and don't look up much. that kind of thing.

There is a choice of toxic chemicals offered by doctors or you can choose a more natural route of omega-3's and mediation/yoga.
