Regarding an American flag patch I bought in a surplus shop where the flag seems reversed, with the stars on the upper right instead of the left.

An actual flag has two sides. If you are standing and looking at the flag from a flagpole, whether the starts are on the left or the right depends on which side of the flagpole you are on.

Patches are designed to be worn. If worn on the shoulder, the the stars would be to the front of the person, as if the person were the flagpole and the flag were billowing out behind. That's why patches designed to be worn on the right shoulder have the stars to the right.

What you most likely saw was a flag on their RIGHT shoulder. The idea is that as they are moving forward the wind is blowing it in the correct direction. If you look on their left shoulder the blue will be on the left side. The only time you will see a flag displayed with the blue on the right is when the flag is worn on the right shoulder.

It was made wrong and you don't need to use it. When a flag is hung flat the stars should be on your left (left upper like where you would begin to read a book) if it is horizontally or vertically hung.Best wishes.Look up the etiquette for the flag and you will be surprised at how often it is done wrong.

The flag on patches and airplanes is reversed to show it "flying in the wind" it is just a thing they do.

This patch is to be applied to the right ride of your body on the sleeve. That way it appears that as you move forward, the flag will wave towards the rear.

when worn on the uniform, it symbolizes a soldier running into battle carrying the flag. just imagine if you were carrying a flag, it would face that way.
