Two ears are needed so we can determine that a sound has come from our right-hand or left-hand side.

We know that the source of a sound is on the left side because the sound waves entered our left ear just the slightest bit before they reached our right ear. Our brain uses that small time delay to establish the location of the source -- something it couldn't do if we had only one ear.

Balance, and only one ear is mono, two stereo. But no one has really ever suffered by only being able to hear out of one ear. The suffering comes with a totaly hearing loss after being able to hear.

When something that's not straight in front of you makes a sound, it reaches the closer ear first. Your brain can figure out which direction the sound came from by the time difference between when the sound hit the first ear and when it hit the other ear.
