The water helps to dissolve the medication and promotes absorption so you get maximum benefit from it.

Some medications have a tendency to crystallize after being broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream if not well dissolved by water. All blood passes through the tiny vessels in your kidneys and if there are crystals of these meds( crystals have sharp edges) passing through these vessels they can tear and become lodged in the vessels, causing kidney damage. The more water you drink with these types of meds the greater the chance they will stay dissolved and not form crystals.

Most of those warnings are just so you don't choke on the pill and that it goes all the way down. some meds have a lot of sodium, and can get you dehydrated, and some need to be diluted. It depends what would happen. If you're still curious, talk to a pharmacist.

Some medicines need the water to break it down so it will begin to work. Some need the water to keep them from being so potent that they make you sick to your stomach (like sulfa drugs and some others) It depends on the medicine, but you could ask your pharmacist

usually either because 1) the drug isnt very soluble so they want you to take more water which will speed up/increase absortption of the drug or 2) the drug is an irritant and if it gets stuck in your throat it can burn and/or damage the lining of your throat
