The highway route takes about 4 1/2- 5 hours; basically you get on I-70 East to Frederick, pick up I-270 South and hit I-495 (the Capital beltway) on to your final destination in the city.

If you're looking for a more scenic route, US40 runs pretty much parallel to I-70; take it from W. Va to Frederick, then down MD355 into the DC suburbs. But it will take a LOT longer!

Its around 5 or 6 hours, give or take.
You twop basic options are to take I-70 to to I-76, take it to Breezewood PA and then head south to I-270

or take I-79 near Washington PA down to Morgantown
I-68 east to Hagerstown and I-270.
Either way you take I-270 straight to the Beltway.
I prefer the I-77 route as it is more scenic, and it avoids more of the truck traffic that I-70 gets.

If you like mountains, you can take I-79 down to Weston (take the Buchannon exit), and head east on US 33 over to Harrisonburg VA. From there, north on I-81 to I-66, and I-66 takes you straight into Washington DC. Fantastic views of the Appalachian and Shenandoah mountains.
